Using GPS cell phones to beat traffic jams?
September 10, 2005 by Rich Owings
From this article comes news that ALK Technologies, the manufacturer of CoPilot Live, is working on a new way to use GPS to beat traffic jams. Last month I reported on Garmin’s Street Pilot 2720 which helps route you around traffic jams, by linking to a satellite network that provides traffic info.
ALK’s approach, still a few years away from being ready, is to use signals from GPS-enabled cell phones to determine their position and rate of speed. Once you have signals from enough phones, you can tell how fast traffic is moving.
