Bloggers discover newly risen volcanic island

New_volcanic_islandOT notice: This isn’t a GPS post, but it is a G(eographical) post.

I don’t recall seeing this on other geo-blogs, and though it happened this past summer, I just came across it the other day. It seems that a blogger, sailing the Yacht Maiken, discovered a new island near Tonga,  in the South Pacific.

The photo to the left below, is actually of floating pumice. These pumice "rafts" have been reported to be as large as 19 miles wide.

The story is told here and here, and there are more great photos  from the good ship Maiken posted as well.

UPDATE: It looks like Ogle Earth beat me to the punch this morning.
