To wrap up this series on the future of GPS, I’ll indulge in pure fantasy. Unlike the features listed in my posts on GPS predictions and my GPS wish list I don’t expect to see the items listed below for a couple of years anyway:
Load balancing
Once most people have GPS receivers with live traffic info, what happens when 90% of traffic is rerouted around a jam up? Another traffic jam is created! I wonder how traffic info providers are going to handle load balancing.
Tricorder
My techie wife says she wants a tricorder. Not the type they had on Star Trek, but a true all-in-one device. She wants a GPS, full Windows OS, digital camera and phone, in a not too bulky device. We’re moving that direction with UMPC’s, AKA Origami, though reviewers have not been kind to them. Now when will we see those projectable keyboards?
Internet
And as long as a full blown computer is on my fantasy list, better give me Internet connectivity options including Wi-Fi, WiMAX and EV-DO. Actually, scratch the other two. I want WiMAX, at 70 MPH!
