New fitness and handheld GPS units coming from Garmin

Garmin announced their Q4 financials today — another record. But what caught my eye was a brief paragraph in the discussion of their 2007 fiscal outlook:

We anticipate outdoor/fitness segment revenues to grow 20 percent in 2007 led by new outdoor products with enhanced features, high sensitivity GPS receivers, expandable memory and unique functionality, like our recently announced dog-tracker product, the Astro.  Fitness product enhancements slated for our fitness line and better penetration of targeted fitness markets will drive revenue growth as well.

Let’s take a closer look at those cryptic statements:

  • New outdoor products with enhanced features, high sensitivity GPS receivers (and) expandable memory – Maybe we’ll finally see an eTrex line with SiRFstar III chips. As far as expandable memory goes, it’s already in the eTrex and GPSMap x-serie. This either means a new product line, or perhaps an Edge series (for bikes) with maps, or Forerunners with MP3 players. As far as enhanced features, look for aerial photos or XM Weather.
  • New outdoor products with…unique functionality, like our recently announced dog-tracker product, the Astro. – Hmm, this one is the wild card. I fully expect Garmin to enter the pet-tracking market at some point, but not with anything as bulky as the Astro.
  • Fitness product enhancements slated for our fitness line and better penetration of targeted fitness markets will drive revenue growth as well. – Perhaps we’ll see Forerunners with XM radio or built-in MP3 players. And if we don’t see an Edge series with maps, maybe we’ll see a new eTrex with cycling features.

What do you think Garmin will introduce and what would you like to see?
