Rino_530UPDATE: Read our Garmin Rino 530HCx review

Garmin has announced two new Rinos — combination two-way radios and GPS receivers. They build upon the Rino 520 and Rino 530 feature sets, adding a high-sensitivity GPS receiver for improved accuracy, and a micro-SD card for expanded mapping capabilities.

The Rino 520HCx has a 5 watt FRS/GMRS radio with a range of up to 14 miles, color screen and auto-routing capabilities.

The Rino 530HCx (pictured at left) adds to that, an electronic compass, barometric altimeter, plus a seven-channel weather receiver with automatic weather alert capabilities.

Both units use a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a rated life of 14 hours. Neither of the new Rinos has built in memory for mapping — both rely upon the micro-SD card to add maps.

The Rino 520HCx has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $449.99, while the Rino 530HCx has a MSRP of $499.99. Both are expected to be available in June 2007.

Have not seen any indication of the chipset in
the new Rino, neither here nor on Garmin site.
    Any chance it’s Sirf III?

I haven’t seen any indication either. But I have seen positive reports about the performance of other receivers, such as Global Locate and MediaTek. It will be interesting to see which way they go.
