Eneloop rechargeable batteries

Eneloop_rechargeable_batteries

After seeing various glowing recommendations on Groundspeak (the geocaching.com message board), I broke down and bought some rechargeable Sanyo Eneloop batteries. Their claim to fame is that they hold their charge well in storage.

These may well be the best rechargeable batteries on the market these days. I haven’t done an exhaustive test but so far I’ve been quite happy with them. Here’s an in-depth Eneloop rechargeable battery review if you want to dig into the details.

They don’t charge as fast as others, like the 15 minute rechargeable Energizer batteries, but they do seem to hold the charge much longer. It may actually be worth having both types around.

I found this Eneloop package at Costco for under $30, but it doesn’t show up at Costco.com, and I’m not sure if it’s still available in their brick and mortar stores or not. It has 8 AA and 4 AAA batteries, along with two C and D cell adapters that are used by inserting a AA battery into them.

Here’s what Amazon is currently carrying in Eneloops.

  1. I’ve had some since late summer and I’ve been very happy with them. I have 12 of the AAs (2 sets each for my GPSr and camera) and they’ve been great, especially on road trips. I usually end going through a 24 pack of regular AAs during a visit to my parents and in-laws, so they’ve already paid for themselves a few times over.

  2. Caitlin,
Thanks for commenting. I like your site; I’ll have to check in more often. I’ve got a three month old and can’t wait till he’s old enough to go in a bike trailer.

  3. Hi Rich,

I’m sure you know that tne new Eneloops are out now. According to their website, they get 500 more recharging cycles, better low temperature performance, and a longer storage life – 75% power after 3 years.

  4. I’ve looked hard for the new model; they may not be released in the USA as yet. This is speculation but it may be that Sanyo is letting the current stock draw down prior to a major release in the USA. Just reading between the lines as I browse for availability.
