Tritons pulled from REI

Magellan Triton handhelds have disappeared from REI stores and from the REI.com website. The problematic units were pulled, depending on who you ask, at REI’s request or as a result of a Magellan recall. Since other sites are still selling them, I’m betting REI leaned on Magellan to take them back. This post on the Groundspeak forum seems to confirm this. Reportedly, the units will be back in stock after getting a firmware upgrade.

The Triton line has been plagued by a botched introduction; units slipped out of fulfillment warehouses sans cables, and there have been significant and ongoing firmware problems.

REI has a great guarantee, so good that many people pay full retail price there just so they have the option of return, and I expect that returns on the Tritons were so high that they simply could not afford to continue carrying them. At least not until they get new firmware.

Groundspeak is a legal entity. The post you cite isn’t “from Groundspeak”, it’s on the Groundspeak forums from a contributor.
It’s no more “from Groundspeak” than if I typed something here (and it got approved. :-) and it would be considered “from gpstracklog.com”.
That said, I’ve noticed a recurring notion of unhappiness and I hope that Magellan can get this product together before it’s tarnished forever…

I contacted Cabelas where I recently purchased my Triton 400 in the past few months. They have yet to hear any concerns regarding that unit. Is it possible that there are not any firmware issues with the newer units? If not, how can you obtain the firmware upgrades?

    Matt,
    This forum should help…

Triton firmware updates are via the free VantagePoint software that came with your device. The current firmware version is 1.31.
