UPDATE: Read my hands-on Garmin nuvi 205W review. I also have pages up for the nuvi 205, nuvi 255 and nuvi 255W.

Garmin is announcing four new nuvi models today…the nuvi 205, 205W, 255 and 255W (pictured above). These new models bring advanced features into the nuvi 200 series budget line up. Each will include the following:

  • Display of shaded elevation models for a more realistic view of the surrounding terrain
  • Navigation by photos (using Garmin Connect Photos which draws from  Google’s Panoramio photo sharing community)
  • A faster 333 Mhz microprocessor for speedier map redraws and route calculation
  • Faster satellite acquisition via a new Garmin HotFix(TM) feature that calculates and stores critical satellite information
  • The "Where am I?" feature that allows drivers to display their exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and gas stations
  • Optional TMC traffic or enhanced MSN Direct services

The nuvi 205 and 205W will be available in versions that offer mapping choices such as the contiguous United States, Canada or regional sections of Europe.

The nuvi 255 and 255W will be available in versions that include comprehensive coverage of North America, Europe, Australia or New Zealand. The nuvi 255 and 255W models for North America, Australia or New Zealand announce street names in their voice prompts, advising you to "Turn right on Walnut Street" rather than just saying "Turn right in 500 feet."

Suggested retail prices range from $213.32 for the nuvi 205 to $373.32 for the 255W. All units are due in the second quarter of 2008.
