UPDATE: Check out my hands-on DeLorme PN-40 review
Chip Noble of the DeLorme blog has posted three videos showing the forthcoming DeLorme PN-40 in action. It’s a little hard to tell what’s on the screen, but the message is clear — this thing rocks. The videos look at the different types of imagery available, speed of map redraws and the triaxial compass. The PN-40 is expected to be available next month.

This is a lot closer to an ideal GPS than the original PN-20; the improvements in speed and receiver sensitivity, and the affordable imagery subscription plan, are huge improvements. I just wish they had gone just a little further, and incorporated a larger screen. I also wonder about how rugged/weatherproof the unit is, which would be a big plus for outdoor use. And, of course, one big question is how much it’s going to cost. Still, I’d rather pay more for one of these than for a Garmin Colorado/Oregon, and I’ve been a big Garmin fan.
Yeah, I’m looking forward to trying it out.
The PN-20 (and just almost certainly the identically-packaged PN-40) is IPX-7 waterproof. (1 m immersion for 30 minutes). It’s wrapped in rubber, the battery door is gasketed and screws down to keep water out, and it’s otherwise quite waterproof. The cost is $400.
