Auto GPS on a budget

November 24, 2008 by Rich Owings
Nuvi-200-small

For those of you purchasing an entry-level auto GPS this holiday season, here are my recommendations. The 4.3" wide-screen units and text-to-speech features are well worth it if that's in your budget.

  • Garmin nuvi 200 – This 3.5" touch screen model includes maps of the entire U.S. except for Alaska
  • Garmin nuvi 200W – The same as the 200, but with a 4.3" wide screen
  • Garmin nuvi 250 – A 3.5" model with maps of the entire U.S. and Canada
  • Garmin nuvi 250W – A 4.3" version of the nuvi 250
  • Garmin nuvi 260 – This 3.5" model adds text-to-speech, so you'll hear "drive
    one-half mile, then
turn left on Oak Street," rather than just "drive
    one-half mile, then turn left"
  • Garmin nuvi 260W – A 4.3" version of the nuvi 260
  • TomTom ONE 3rd edition – This 3.5" model has maps of the U.S. and Canada, but lacks text-to-speech
  • TomTom ONE XL – This model is similar to the ONE 3rd edition, but bumps the screen size to 4.3"
  • TomTom ONE 125 – Newer than the two models above, this 3.5" unit leaves out the maps of Canada.

All links go to my reviews, where you'll find detailed information, price comparisons and additional resources. These budget models currently range in price from $130 to $180, but may be discounted significantly during the holidays. For great prices, keep an eye on my GPS Deals site, where I'll be posting holiday deals from Black Friday until the end of the year.
