You must use a map and when there are more options and you have got on the route yourself it will then and only then conform to a all interstate route. I have toured many a neighborhood by driving solely on this things directions. This is a well known problem with MapSource & nuvis. Sorry to hear it's not working out. You can add a via point to perhaps force a different route, but it's far from the ideal solution.
