UPDATE: Read my hands on Garmin nuvi 1690 review.

It looks like Garmin has done an about face on connected PNDs. A nuvi 1690 has shown up on the FCC’s website, offering GSM + GPRS cellular connectivity. Previously, Garmin has taken the approach that consumers don’t want another monthly bill, in addition to their mobile phone plan, which led them to develop the nuvifone. So it will be interesting to see if they have an alternative subscription model for the nuvi 1690.

I don’t have a lot of details on the new unit, other than the fact that it includes Bluetooth and utilizes the Wavecom GSM modeule Q2687.

Based on little more than previous industry trends and my own in-house crystal ball, we’re expecting a formal announcement at the IFA trade show in Berlin early next month, with units available in time for the holiday shopping season.

Just by looking at the future’s doesn’t mean the device has to be good, reviews can only be made upon usage and response of the pnd in practical terms.
