Seven inch Magellan RoadMate 1700 announced

September 17, 2009 by

Magellan-RoadMate-1700UPDATE: I’ve posted a Magellan RoadMate 1700 page with links to hands-on reviews

Magellan made it official today – they are introducing a seven inch model, the RoadMate 1700. There’s really not a whole lot else new here, other than a video-in jack.

All the major auto GPS manufacturers are moving towards big-screen units, typically five or seven-inch models. I guess this is their way of fighting small screen smartphones, but if this is as much as they can bring to the battle, I think they’ve already lost the war.

Now that I’m done editorializing, I’ll add that the RoadMate 1700 will retail for $299 and is expected to be available around October 10, according to Amazon.

Here’s the news release…

Magellan, one of the leading GPS brands, today unveiled the new Magellan RoadMate 1700, the latest addition to its award-winning RoadMate series. Magellan will showcase this new product and its entire 2009 lineup at Pepcom’s Holiday Spectacular media preview event in New York on September 17.

The new Magellan RoadMate 1700 is designed to better meet the needs of consumers who are seeking larger-sized displays and easy-to-use electronics. The 7-inch WVGA full-color display provides four times the standard screen resolution for better readability and increased safety on the roads. Like other 2009 Magellan models, Magellan’s OneTouch user interface gives you instant access to your favorite addresses and searches.

“The Magellan RoadMate 1700 was created for consumers who could benefit from a larger device that provides a safe and straightforward navigation experience," said Mike Wagner, senior director of product marketing for Magellan. “With its large color touch screen, built-in AAA TourBook® and Roadside Assistance, and the OneTouch access to your favorite searches, the Magellan RoadMate 1700 is the ideal travel companion for SUVs, family vacations in the RV, or even commercial truck drivers."

The Magellan RoadMate 1700 includes preloaded maps of the 50 United States, Canada and Puerto Rico; highway lane assistance; spoken street name guidance, mini USB 2.0; a Micro SD; multi-destination routing with route optimization; and integrated AAA TourBook® guide travel information. While waiting for the kids or when you arrive at your destination, use the Video-In jack to connect an iPod® or other video source to watch live video on the bright 7” display (cable not included).

The Magellan RoadMate 1700 is now available online and in many retail locations. It includes a windshield mount and cradle, cigarette lighter adapter, protective pouch, USB data cable and an adhesive disk for dash mounting. The unit retails for $299. I JUST WONDER HOW GOOD THIS IS GOING TO BE OR IF IT IS TRUE THAT THEY DO HAVE 7 INCHES GPS SCREEN. I WILL PURCHASE AT LEAST 10 FOR CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR HARD TO SEE FAMILIES.I JUST WANT THE COMPANY TO UPDATE THE UNIT AUTOMATICALLY WHEN NEW SOFTWARE COMES OUT.

  2. Rich Owings says:

You won’t get automatic updates. I wouldn’t buy ten. Buy one and check it out yourself first.
