UPDATE: I’ve posted a Magellan RoadMate 1700 page with links to hands-on reviews
Magellan made it official today – they are introducing a seven inch model, the RoadMate 1700. There’s really not a whole lot else new here, other than a video-in jack.
All the major auto GPS manufacturers are moving towards big-screen units, typically five or seven-inch models. I guess this is their way of fighting small screen smartphones, but if this is as much as they can bring to the battle, I think they’ve already lost the war.
Now that I’m done editorializing, I’ll add that the RoadMate 1700 will retail for $299 and is expected to be available around October 10, according to Amazon.
Here’s the news release.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR A BIG SCREEN GPS UNTIL TODAY I SAW IT ON LINE FOR $299.00.
I JUST WONDER HOW GOOD THIS IS GOING TO BE OR IF IT IS TRUE THAT THEY DO HAVE 7 INCHES GPS SCREEN. I WILL PURCHASE AT LEAST 10 FOR CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR HARD TO SEE FAMILIES.I JUST WANT THE COMPANY TO UPDATE THE UNIT AUTOMATICALLY WHEN NEW SOFTWARE COMES OUT.
You won’t get automatic updates. I wouldn’t buy ten. Buy one and check it out yourself first.
