UPDATE: I’ve posted more detailed TomTom XXL 530-S and XXL 540-S review pages

Yes, you read that right. XXL. TomTom goes wide-screen with two new five-inch navigators, the TomTom XXL 530S and XXL 540S (Amazon links).

Like all current TomTom models, the new series will include IQ Routes Technology, which TomTom says will result in a faster route up to 35% of the time.

The XXL units both come with preloaded maps of the US and Canada, and TomTom’s newly redesigned menu system.

Adding a black finish, the 540S also includes Advanced Lane Guidance, maps of Mexico, and bumps the number of POIs to seven million.

The XL 530S and 540S are expected to be available next month (Amazon is showing an availability date of October 20), retailing for $279.95 and $299.95, respectively.

Odd to have two devices so closely matched. For the small $20 difference there’s no reason to consider the 530 IMO. I had assumed these new NA models (not announced for Europe BTW) would be using TT’s new navcore 9 software. Apparently not. That may turn out to be a good thing tho, as early indications are that TomTom’s new interface, scheduled to roll out with the recently announced x50 series, is not being well-received by those who got an early peek.

Yeah, I assumed that too, due to language in the news release…
