That was fast. Just a few days after we learned of its existence, Magellan’s car kit has cleared the FCC. The boys at TomTom could sure learn something from them about hustle. But hey, on top of speed, the holder just looks pretty cool. I’m still trying to figure out what the LED lens and rear slide button are all about though. Check out the PDF, have a look yourself, and share your insights, guesses, etc. below.

The rear slide button is for adjusting/sliding the top clip on the holder to accomodate iPods (slightly smaller than an iPhone) and iphones with skins/cases. Smart design as long as it’s a quick job to mount a phone. The TomTom mount is pretty unforgiving. Plain, unskinned phones only and no iPods. The lens? No idea.
I agree that it’s a great idea if it works. My Droid came with a nice case, but I can’t use it in the mount, so I’m carrying it sans case now. I guess I should have bought the insurance! :-0
The “LED Lens” looks to me like an ordinary “Power LED” that will be on when the iPhone/iPod is connected and the car kit is attached to the car lighter….
Duh! That’s what I get for posting so early in the morning!
If you are a manufacturer and don’t want this type of early publicity about you product to tip off competitors before the product is actually sold, see what I wrote about this problem on my blog:
