That was fast. Just a few days after we learned of its existence, Magellan’s car kit has cleared the FCC. The boys at TomTom could sure learn something from them about hustle. But hey, on top of speed, the holder just looks pretty cool. I’m still trying to figure out what the LED lens and rear slide button are all about though. Check out the PDF, have a look yourself, and share your insights, guesses, etc. below.

Black Friday GPS deal predictions
Okay, there’s not a whole lot of prognosticating or divining involved – Black Friday ads are posted all over the Web. But I can share a summary and some insights into what to expect. I’ve been tracking the leaks and prepping my GPS Deals site, where you’ll be able to find the best bargains without waiting in line at 4 a.m.! Here’s how its shaping up:
We have our winners!
Our contest has now wrapped up and the three winners should be getting set up with their TeleNav GPS Navigator apps, even as I write this. Congratulations go out to @MyBellaMia, @mazzmn and @madamerkf. And a great big thank you to the folks at @TeleNav and to all of our new followers too.
Here are the gritty details on the selection process for anyone interested. Our 72 entrants were assigned a number in sequential order, starting with 1 for the first entrant and 72 for the last entry received before midnight last night. Winners were selected using a random number generator (results and screenshot below). The first three numbers (15, 31 and 9) were our winners, who were notified by DM earlier today that they had won and needed to respond with a valid email address, which all three did, wrapping up the selection process.
Garmin nuvi 1690 review

Hands on with Garmin’s first connected nuvi
UPDATE: This model has been discontinued, replaced by the nuLink 1695.
The Garmin nüvi 1690 is the company’s first “connected” GPS. It utilizes Garmin’s nuLink! services, giving you access to Google Local Search, NAVTEQ traffic, gas prices and more.
Magellan rolls out iPhone app; Droid users left in dust
The Magellan RoadMate iPhone app (iTunes link) was introduced this weekend. It includes text-to-speech, lane assist and in-app music controls, and runs $79.99. Magellan also says they have a car kit coming (pic below) that has an integrated GPS receiver and will accommodate the iPhone or iPod touch.
Garmin nuvi 1250
The Garmin nüvi 1250 is a lower-level model in a line of Garmin GPS navigators introduced in 2009 (here is a list of more recent nuvi introductions). All of the units in the 1200, 1300 and 1400 series come with customizable data fields and the ability to utilize the pedestrian and mass transit features of Garmin’s CityXplorer maps. They also have text-to-speech, so you’ll hear “drive one-half mile, then turn left on Elm Street,” instead of just “drive one-half mile, then turn left.”

Garmin ecoRoute ESP
Garmin is rolling out a new ecoRoute accessory that connects to your car’s on board diagnostic (OBD) system, giving you insights into those fault codes when your check engine light comes on. You’ll need a Bluetooth enabled nuvi 1xxx series unit to take advantage, and $150 for the Bluetooth transmitter that plugs into the OBD port!
TomTom GO 630

UPDATE: This model has been discontinued. For a list of current TomTom models and their features, please see our TomTom comparison chart.
The TomTom GO 630 is essentially the GO 730 minus a few audio features; the 630 drops the FM transmitter, the MP3 player and iPod connectivity.
Garmin international topo maps
A lot of new topo map products have shown up on Garmin’s website. Some of these may have been available for awhile, but most appear to be new. I’ll also note that they seem to be different than the offerings from Garmin’s long running third-party MapSource developer program. In addition to the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Australia, I’m now seeing:
