What people bought – November 2009

Not seeing last month’s list? Click here for the latest listing of the top ten GPS receivers on GPS Tracklog.
I’ve seen a couple of lists showing which GPS receivers were the most popular over the holiday shopping season, so here’s my top ten list, with a twist. This monthly feature usually ranks units according to the most popular GPS Tracklog reviews. But during the holidays, there are enough sales made here and on our GPS Deals site, through partners like Amazon, that we can rank actual units sold.
Let’s be clear though; my list is affected by several factors – for one thing, there is a strong Amazon influence, which other lists may not reflect (Amazon doesn’t disclose total holiday sales figures, though they do post a list that is updated hourly). It’s also affected by sales and promotions on specific units, which of my reviews rank better on search engines, how positive (or not) I was about a particular unit, previous top ten lists, and probably a few other factors. Nevertheless, our rankings aren’t too far off the others, and it’s interesting to look anyway, so see what you think. The main thing I take away is that folks were after bargains. Very few new or high-end units, that haven’t been discounted, made the list.

I’m going to Mexico on vacations, so I need your help. Is there any GPS with Mexico maps that I can take with me? Is it possible to add maps to any GPS device?
Some of the new TomToms have Mexican maps. And Garmin has a couple of nuvi models with Mexican maps. Coverage on many is extremely limited. You’ll find more free maps to add to Garmin units than any other brand. Check out http://downloads.cloudmade.com and http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com.
if you buy a gps from walmart that costs under $100 , they give you the option to extend warranty another year for like $6. Do you think its worth extending warranty on GPS, specifically tomtoms?
I haven’t had any problems with units dying after such a short time. Depends on your risk tolerance I guess.
