I believe some of the newer, connected units receive data via cellular modem though, which is built into the device. These include the TomTom LIVE series and the Garmin nuvi 1690. I assumed the antenna was embedded in the unit itself until I was doing research on Garmins with free traffic and found out you only get traffic updates when plugged in. That disappointed me. I guess I'm in a minority, as I use my PND on battery power most of the time because it is inconvenient to plug in.
