Looks like Magellan is going to roll out an uber-case for the iPhone. The ruggedized ToughCase adds an improved GPS receiver, battery pack, IPX7 water proofing and quite a bit of bulk. And it’ll set you back about $200!
There’s no official word on the Magellan site, so details are scant, but apparently they gave one to Gizmodo to try out.

Wow, 200 bucks. Niche product. Can’t see them selling many.
Rick
Yeah, and I’m not sure it will be discounted that much. Their car kit
has only been discounted down to $99.99 from the $129.99 list.
Another issue. Seems Apple is coming out with a new Iphone every 2-3 years. Most folks upgrade to the latest/greatest phone, i assume. So, if you buy this product, it has a limited life.
Rick
Good point.
Pricey, yes, but less than a new GPSMAP62s to replace my 60CSx given that I already have the iphone. Much handier to just carry one device while kayaking, etc., where IPX7 really matters.
I’ll certainly check it out.
Maybe i missed it, but i would think a critical element to consider about this case is whether or not the Ipone touch screen is useable from outside the case. If not, functionallity is seriously impaired.
Rick
Surely the touch screen still works.
I had the chance to play with a pre-production sample. The touch screen still works extremely well through the case. Speaker works very well through the case. Sunlight readabilty is slightly diminished although Magellan states this will be improved on the final version.
looks ultra bulky :/
def takes away from the iphone’s sleek aesthetics
