Garmin’s OpenCaching.com website is live as of this morning. You can create an account or log in with your Garmin account. The site has a lengthy terms of service agreement that appears when you first log in. Other notable things I garnered in a quick first look include forums and a paucity of geocaches (see screenshot above).
In case you haven’t been following this story, it’s been quite interesting and a bit controversial, since there is an existing OpenCaching community that this domain used to be associated with. There’s been good coverage at It’s Not About the Numbers and CacheMania.
Check it out and let us know what you think. Will you be using the site?
UPDATES:
- Garmin’s blog post on OpenCaching.com includes this quote: “OpenCaching.com will work with any device or software package that can read GPX files, regardless of manufacturer.”
- And they have a Twitter account — @OpenCache

You know what I like the most about OpenCaching.com? They acknowledge that all the geocaches uploaded are the intellectual property of the hider and that all their information will be published under a creative commons license. Because of that alone, I went ahead and uploaded all my caches I’ve hidden their site.
I don’t know if it’s coincidence, but Groundspeek seems to have finally rolled out some interesting changes on their geocaching.com web site.
Since OpenCaching’s listings were pretty sad for my area, I uploaded a couple of my non-subscriber caches. Like Tanner, I appreciated the acknowledgement.
