Caveats

This list is affected by several factors – sales and promotions on specific units, which of my reviews rank better on search engines, how positive (or not) I was about a particular unit, previous top ten lists, and probably a few other factors. Still, our rankings haven’t been too far off others in the past, and hey, it’s interesting to look!

Analysis

On the auto side, six of the top ten units offered lifetime maps and traffic, while five sported 5” screens. You can expect these features to dominate in 2011.

The handheld side is a bit more interesting this time around, as the Oregon 450 blew the competition out of the water, outselling the next most popular unit by more than 4 to 1! DeLorme’s PN-60w + SPOT came in at number three, a bit of a surprise for a fairly pricey model. Also notable was the Geomate.jr rising to the number five spot, and the new Garmin 62s languishing in seventh. The latter really surprised me when a very good sale was met with lackluster response.

Thank you!

Thanks once loyal readers, for your patience and support over the holiday season. We do make a small amount with each purchase, and it is the only way we can justify the time and money spent running GPS Tracklog.

Thanks Rich, I ordered a 1490LMT for myself on black friday, and an Oregon 450 as a gift a few days later. Both were great deals I wouldn’t have known about if I weren’t subscribed to your RSS feed.

The 1490LMT is great, but I’m looking forward to hearing more about the next generation of traffic services – I was looking forward to the Dash connected traffic being a first class feature, and it seems to be an afterthought on most current models.
