NASA on GPS jamming and LightSquared

GPS-III-AI recently came across a GPS jamming white paper (PDF) from NASA’s Space-Based Positioning Navigation & Timing (PNT) Advisory Board, which led me to other interesting documents on LightSquared, but let’s focus first on their anti-jamming recommendations, which I’ve summarized here…

No such thing as a GPS implant

Feline_microchipJournalists continue to be snookered by already debunked hoaxes, and perhaps a few too many nights watching Dollhouse. The latest one proclaims that:

Tiny GPS microchips with your personal info can be slipped under your skin, leaving you lighter, ID tossed in the shredder.

Garmin nuvi 2400 series hits the market

Garmin nuvi 2460LMT

UPDATE: In addition to my hands on review of the nuvi 2460LT, I’ve now posted pages for the Garmin nuvi 2450, nuvi 2450LM, and the nuvi 2460LMT.

The 5” Garmin nuvi 24xx series has hit the market, and I suspect they are going to be quite popular. I was certainly very impressed with the nuvi 2460LT I recently reviewed. Biggest GPS jammer ever, courtesy the FCC

gps_satellite_altThere’s been a spate of stories recently about how we’re over-reliant on GPS, and while some threats are overblown, GPS jamming can be more serious, especially on the scale tentatively approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Wha? Read on my friend…

Garmin nuvi 2460LMT

Garmin nuvi 2460LMT

The Garmin nüvi 2460LMT is one of Garmin’s recently released 5” ultra-widescreen navigators comprising the nuvi 24xx line. In addition to the big screen, these navigators bring many other high-end features at a relatively reasonable price, including several not found on the nuvi 37xx series, such as custom route avoidances. Which makes the 2460LMT one of, if not the best, nuvi yet.

MyTomTom and 2×05 series finally getting map updates

Screen shot 2011-03-10 at 9.02.36 AMTomTom has been transitioning from TomTom HOME to MyTomTom, which is the desktop manager for the newest TomToms, such as the GO 2505TM. Unfortunately, early adopters have been stuck with devices that can’t get the latest map guarantee, Map Share corrections, etc. Well today, TomTom is taking a big step towards making that right. You can read about it all here, but they are promising 2×05 map updates in the next few days (and I’ve seen one report that they are already rolling out). read more
