Prediction – New eTrex line with dedicated geocaching unit

eTrex-Venture-GC-predictionI’ve already predicted an updated eTrex line from Garmin this year. But I had one of those duh! moments this morning as I was trawling the Interwebz for deals. That’s when I came across the Magellan eXplorist GC for $129.99 and realized that Garmin can’t completely cede the low-end paperless geocaching market. So it doesn’t feel like I’m really going out on a limb here. And we might even see them roll out some tighter opencaching.com integration in the process.

Google Map Maker lets you edit US maps

Google-Map-MakerGoogle Map Maker has come to the US. Instead of just reporting an error, you can now go in and make changes yourself. All edits will be reviewed for accuracy before being committed to the publicly available map. The information posted today talks about POIs, bike lanes and the like, but it appears that you can edit/add streets and addresses as well. Eventually, this should improve Google Maps Navigation, which definitely needs it! Check out the video promo below and then have at it my cartographic friends!

US Supreme CourtThe Department of Justice (DOJ) yesterday asked the US Supreme Court to weigh in on warrantless GPS tracking. Citing conflicting federal appellate court rulings, the DOJ asked the Court to rule on a very simple question…

Magellan-RoadMate-1575

UPDATE: Read my hands on review of the Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM.

Hey, look what showed up on the FCC website this morning – a WiFi-enabled Magellan RoadMate 5175 series. We don’t have a lot of specs at this point, but we can tell you that it rotates into portrait or landscape orientations, and that it will come in traffic (5175T) and traffic plus lifetime map (5175T-LM) editions.

Magellan eXplorist PRO 10

Magellan-eXplorist-PRO-710A little over two years ago, MiTAC purchased the consumer products division of the old Magellan Navigation company. The latter went on to become known as Ashtech, continuing to sell professional grade GPS receivers under the MobileMapper brand. I don’t know if there was a two-year non-compete clause or if that doesn’t apply in this case, but MiTAC’s Magellan GPS is back in the game as of today, announcing the Magellan eXplorist PRO 10.
