Alas, a hugely popular Garmin nuvi series has been retired. Yes, the nuvi 2×5 series has been officially discontinued. These models were definitely getting long in the tooth, although they continue to be quite popular, allowing retailers to offer sub-$100 Garmins. I’m sure you’ll still be able to find them on the market for another year or so, but officially the 12xx and 13xx models are the current entry-level nuvis.
Somewhat surprisingly, the much more recently introduced WiFi-enabled 295W nuvi, which sold very well, has fallen too. Has Garmin given up on this market segment (people who want a portable device for email but aren’t ready to spring for a smartphone data plan)? Are they done with WiFi models now that they have cleaned out their nuvifone production lines? Have they ceded this market to Magellan? What do you think?
Here are links to the now discontinued models:

The axe falls…does this mean I will no longer receive map updates for my lifetime subscription (i.e., does this event define end of life in subscription terms)?
I’m using a Tomtom XXL540LTM and the 255w these days. Overall I tend to like the 255w better, and for my wife it’s no contest (though that may be more to her degree of familiarity with the two devices).
The only thing this should affect is that Garmin will no longer make these units and won’t replenish dealers’ stock when exhausted. It should have no effect on warranties or lifetime maps. Garmin is still updating lifetime subscriptions for people who have the StreetPilot 2700.
Garmin has too many different products, and these have been around longer than any of the other nuvi series, so it really is time for them to go IMO. You will probably see some good deals on them now also.
Aww, these really were some of my favority Nuvis. Right features as the right price range. I think throughout my whole family we own 5 or 6 of the different 2×5 series.
