About

GPS Tracklog was created by me, Rich Owings, in August 2005.

A lifelong love of the outdoors and maps, combined with a definite weakness for tech toys and gear, collided when I purchased my first GPS. I got into it fairly heavily and my quest to create the most complete map of my favorite natural areas resulted in me trying many different mapping programs. I also love to share and write, so when I realized there was no book on this subject, I set out to create one. The result was ‘GPS Mapping – Make Your Own Maps’. GPS Tracklog was actually started to promote the book, but has since taken on a life of its own.

GPS Tracklog is owned by a family-held corporation, Affiliate Nomad Inc.

Your GPS TRACKLOG is of great help. Thank you very much. I wish you all the best in all your works. I wonder if I can ask a question. I have a nuvi 760 now all I can see on the monitor is the picture of the unit connected to a computer by a cable. How can I solve this problem.

    Thanks in advance

      From Garmin.com support:

Question: How do I turn my nuvi 700 or 705 series device off or on if it appears frozen or won’t power on?
      Answer:

The device has a soft reset to shut it down if it were to freeze. Please use the steps below to perform a soft reset on the device.

To power the device off with the soft reset:

      1. Slide the power key to the left
      2. Hold it in that position for about 10-15 seconds

      The device should power off.

In some cases the device may even appear to be dead and it won’t power on from external power. This can be corrected by performing a soft reset while connected to a power source.

To power the device on with the soft reset:

      1. Connect device to a power source (preferably a computer with the USB cable)
      2. Slide the power key to the left
      3. Hold it in that position for about 10-15 seconds

      The device should power on.

If the device does power off please update the system software. In order to update the software you would need to download the program called WebUpdater. This can be downloaded from the Garmin website.

      To download the program

      1. Please click on the following link: Garmin WebUpdater
      2. Click on Download
      3. Click on Download that corresponds with your computer operating system
      4. Click on the “I agree to the….” at the bottom of the webpage for the license agreement
      5. Click on Download
      6. Follow the on-screen prompts

The system software should be update after the WebUpdater program is completed.

If that doesn’t work, try a hard reset, but you will lose all data. You can back it up first if you can copy the current.gpx file to your computer…

      Question: How do I perform a master reset on my nuvi 200, 205, 465, 500, 600, 700, 705 or 1000 series device?
      Answer:

      To perform a Master Reset on the nuvi 200, 205, 465, 500, 600, 700, 705, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400 or 1600 series device:

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings. If you would like to back up your favorites you can find instructions to do so here.

      1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
      2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
      3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
      4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
      * You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
      5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
      6. Touch Yes

The device will automatically reset. Follow the on screen prompts then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

How do I get my garmin 260W to verbalize the street names. All it seems to do is to tell me when to turn but no street names are spoken.

Just a quick question. If you could buy a Garmin 1450LMT or a Tom Tom XXL540
TM, which one would you buy (don’t factor cost, features and reliability only)?
    Thanks

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 1350T August 2010. I notice that when I connect it to the Garmin website the site asks if I want to share the information on my GPS with them. I would have to be crazy to just indiscriminately share my travel details with a corporation. I am curious however as to how others feel about this issue. IMHO I think a great deal of the population doesn’t value privacy much anymore, and they spread their life’s intimate details all over the internet. Comments welcome…

This kind of data is supposed to be anonymized. Typically that’s done by not recording the first/last mile or two, though researchers have shown that this is often not enough or not done effectively.
