Before I got into GPS I used cyclometers to tell me how far I had gone on my mountain bike, which was very helpful when a trail description said something like “watch for hidden trail on left after 3.2 miles!” They worked surprisingly well, although dealing with wires, strapping a magnet to the spokes and calibrating the whole setup was way too complex. Fortunately there’s a new kid in town, bringing GPS accuracy and new features without the need for wires, magnets or calibration. It’s the Garmin Edge 200, an entry-level GPS cyclometer from the company that has previously focused on higher-end cycling devices.

Ok folks, this one may be a fluke, but it’s worth a try. Eastern Mountain Sports (EMS) has brought back their Black Friday pricing on GPS receivers. Sort of. What they are saying is that everything is 20-30% off today, but that Garmin units are excluded. Yet if you look at their GPS page, they’ve got some great deals on Garmin units. If you want one, I’d move fast. Here are some of the best; the inReach, eTrex and Montana deals are particularly hot:

New Garmin data fieldsA recent beta firmware update for the Garmin Montana series brought twenty new data field options to the device, as well as data field categories. You can see four of the new data fields in the screenshot above. The Vertical Distance to Destination is sure to be a hit for the peak baggers among us. Hopefully these will make it to other models as well.
