Garmin GPSMAP 78s review

June 22, 2010 by Rich Owings

Hands on with the Garmin GPSMAP 78s
The Garmin GPSMAP 78s brings the first major update to the GPSMAP handheld line in over four years. The reason for it taking so long is that Garmin had a huge hit with the 60/76 series, and instead of messing with a winner, they turned their attention to [...]

UPDATE 2: I’ve now posted my hands on review of the Garmin GPSMAP 78s.
UPDATE – I’m now doing hands on testing of the GPSMAP 78 series, which seems to be the same platform as the forthcoming 62 series.

Garmin GPSMAP 76

April 16, 2010 by Rich Owings

The Garmin GPSMAP 76 is probably Garmin’s most popular entry-level marine handheld. This greyscale unit floats and can accommodate up to 8MB of added maps. Its pre-loaded basemap brings marine navigation aids, including lights, buoys, sound signals and day beacons.
Here’s a tool to compare the GPSMAP 76 to other Garmin marine handhelds.

Garmin GPSMAP 640 – Hybrid marine and auto unit

October 3, 2008 by Rich Owings

Garmin is announcing the GPSMAP 640 today, a new hybrid marine and auto navigator. The 600 series represents a completely new product line for Garmin. Nuvi-like in appearance, the 640 features a 5.2" touchscreen, the same size as that found on the nuvi 5000.
With a couple of extra-wide screen models out now, I’m betting [...]

Garmin Colorado 400c review

May 16, 2008 by Rich Owings

UPDATE 2: This model has been discontinued. For more current recommendations, please refer to our [...]

January 22, 2007 by Rich Owings

I didn’t see this until today, but earlier this month, Ben Ellison of Panbo (the best marine GPS blog I know of), posted info on some upcoming Garmin marine GPS units. The big news is that touch screens are coming. The page has been pulled down from TigerGPS.com, but I did find this page on [...]

U.S. Boating Charts on DVD

April 29, 2006 by Rich Owings

MapTech has a new marine product — U.S. Boating Charts on DVD, which has over 3000 NOAA and river charts. The best part is the price — only $50. That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Updates are free. More information is contained in this U.S. Boating Charts press release.
