July 7, 2010 by Rich Owings

Augmented reality for the backcountry
Peak.AR is a free augmented reality app for the Android and iPhone platforms, that allows you to identify distant peaks by simply pointing your phone’s camera at them. Pretty cool huh?

Massachusetts bans phone navigation – PNDs okay

July 5, 2010 by Rich Owings

Massachusetts has a new anti-texting law that will ban the use of cell phones for auto navigation, while allowing personal navigation devices (PND). While I think PNDs are much easier and safer to use than phones, I have my doubts that this was a carefully considered part of the legislation. Hey, maybe TomTom did [...]

T-Mobile Garminfone review

June 28, 2010 by Rich Owings

Hands on with the T-Mobile Garminfone
The T-Moble Garminfone is Garmin’s first Android smartphone released in North America. Produced by the Garmin-Asus partnership, it includes many of the goodies you would find on a nuvi, including North American maps, junction view, lane assist, Where am I?, tracklogs and multi-destination routing.

BlackBerry to give apps access to Dash traffic probe data

June 21, 2010 by Rich Owings

I was listening to Tech News Today this morning when Becky Worley threw out this little tidbit. Apparently, RIM (maker of Blackberry devices and purchaser of Dash Navigation) is going to make Dash traffic probe data available to all Blackberry developers. Furthermore, the anonymized traffic reporting function will be opt out, meaning a huge [...]

Garmin-Asus nuvifone E600

June 11, 2010 by Rich Owings

A Garmin-Asus E600 “PDA phone” has cleared the FCC. Little information was made available in the filing though, with no indication whether it is going to be an Android phone or use the customized Linux OS found on their first AT&T nuvifone. About all we can say is that it’s a GSM phone that [...]

My Tracks for Android

May 17, 2010 by Rich Owings

My Tracks is a free Android app that allows you to record and share GPS tracks. Incredibly easy to use, it layers your track onto Google Maps or satellite view (as shown above). Getting the track off your phone is as simple as saving the track, selecting the drop down More button and then [...]

Coming to the US (eventually)

April 28, 2010 by Rich Owings

There were a couple of major announcements made yesterday by TomTom and Garmin-Asus; unfortunately they didn’t involve products for the US, at least not yet. I do expect that all will be making it to our shores eventually. The Garmin-Asus team will need to romance a carrier first, while TomTom just seems to have [...]

Garminfone coming to T-Mobile

April 21, 2010 by Rich Owings

UPDATE: Read my hands on review of the T-Mobile Garminfone.
Garmin and T-Mobile have announced the Android-powered Garminfone, which will be exclusive to T-Mobile. This seems to be a US version of the nuvifone A50, previously announced for some Asian and European markets. That model got quite a few positive reviews, unlike the original nuvifone G60. [...]

GPS beats market research at own game

March 10, 2010 by Rich Owings

TeleNav is releasing some data this morning that isn’t too startling in its own right, but it speaks to a revolution in market share analysis. Companies like Nielsen and Arbitron estimate media market share, but GPS-enabled phones can do them one two better, delivering location market share data, and not just estimates either. This [...]
