One of the biggest improvements in the latest Garmin nuvi Advanced and Prestige series models is (IMHO) the active lane guidance feature. It’s simply more clear what lane you are supposed to be in and when to move into it. This is especially true as you approach a multiple exit interchange such as you see above, something that might be labeled Exits 10A and 10B. The older versions of lane assist and junction view simply could not make the maneuver as clear as it is with active lane guidance.  read more

Garmin is announcing their 2013 nuvi series today, with new additions to their Essential, Advanced and Prestige series. New to the nuvi line is a high-end unit with a magnetic mount, a couple of  7″ models, interface changes and new features including Real Directions, active lane guidance, and voice-activated traffic. Garmin Bird’s Eye lane guidance spotted in the wild

Last August, the Garmin nuvi Prestige series was announced, promising us a new feature – Bird’s Eye lane guidance to show you the proper lane with an overhead perspective. While I haven’t been crisscrossing the country much lately, it seems to me that, just like Junction View initially, this feature has been slow to roll out. Well, in case you haven’t seen it yet, the screenshot above shows what you can look forward to. The bird’s eye image pops up right before the standard junction view visual. read more

The full line up of the Garmin nuvi Prestige series has hit vendors’ shelves, bringing us Garmin’s first foray into HD Traffic (3490LMT only) and loads of other goodies. The Prestige series offers a resistive capacitive touchscreen with pinch to zoom, and all the features found in the recently introduced Advanced series. Here’s where you can find them:

Can Garmin really introduce 15 new models and at the same time simplify the nuvi line? That’s what they appear to be trying to do. Taking a page from Navigon, their recent acquisition, Garmin is rolling out three new series, the Prestige, Advanced and Essential lines. And while we don’t have an estimated street date, they are referring to these as their 2012 line. UPDATE: The product pages are showing a fourth quarter availability date.
