Magellan intros backup camera for RoadMate 1700 and 9055

Magellan_BackUpCamera_HRMagellan has announced their backup camera, as previously promised for their RoadMate 9055 and 1700 models. It isn’t showing up on Amazon yet, but should be there soon. As you can see above, the camera attaches at the top or bottom of the license plate and transmits wirelessly to the aforementioned 7” models. The camera provides a 120-degree view and is waterproof and dustproof to IPX67 standards, while the transmitter is water resistant to IPX4. MSRP is $149.99.

Truckin’ with Magellan

Magellan-CoPilot Magellan has apparently swung a deal with ALK Technologies, makers of a couple of truck navigation products, PCMiler and CoPilot Truck. These have previously only been available for laptops and some cell phones, but the CoPilot Truck navigation software can now be ported to the Magellan RoadMate 1470 and the seven-inch RoadMate 1700.

This gives Magellan an advantage over the 4.3” Garmin nuvi 465T as far as screen size goes; the two compatible Magellan units have 4.7” and 7” screens.

Seven inch Magellan RoadMate 1700 announced

Magellan made it official today – they are introducing a seven inch model, the RoadMate 1700. There’s really not a whole lot else new here, other than a video-in jack.

All the major auto GPS manufacturers are moving towards big-screen units, typically five or seven-inch models. I guess this is their way of fighting small screen smartphones, but if this is as much as they can bring to the battle, I think they’ve already lost the war.
