About

GPS Tracklog was created by me, Rich Owings, in August 2005.

A lifelong love of the outdoors and maps, combined with a definite weakness for tech toys and gear, collided when I purchased my first GPS. I got into it fairly heavily and my quest to create the most complete map of my favorite natural areas resulted in me trying many different mapping programs. I also love to share and write, so when I realized there was no book on this subject, I set out to create one. The result was ‘GPS Mapping – Make Your Own Maps’. GPS Tracklog was actually started to promote the book, but has since taken on a life of its own.

GPS Tracklog is owned by a family-held corporation, Affiliate Nomad Inc.

Your GPS TRACKLOG is of great help. Thank you very much. I wish you all the best in all your works. I wonder if I can ask a question. I have a nuvi 760 now all I can see on the monitor is the picture of the unit connected to a computer by a cable. How can I solve this problem.

    Thanks in advance

    • From Garmin.com support:

Question: How do I turn my nuvi 700 or 705 series device off or on if it appears frozen or won’t power on?
      Answer:

The device has a soft reset to shut it down if it were to freeze. Please use the steps below to perform a soft reset on the device.

To power the device off with the soft reset:

      1. Slide the power key to the left
      2. Hold it in that position for about 10-15 seconds

      The device should power off.

In some cases the device may even appear to be dead and it won’t power on from external power. This can be corrected by performing a soft reset while connected to a power source.

To power the device on with the soft reset:

      1. Connect device to a power source (preferably a computer with the USB cable)
      2. Slide the power key to the left
      3. Hold it in that position for about 10-15 seconds

      The device should power on.

If the device does power off please update the system software. In order to update the software you would need to download the program called WebUpdater. This can be downloaded from the Garmin website.

      To download the program

      1. Please click on the following link: Garmin WebUpdater
      2. Click on Download
      3. Click on Download that corresponds with your computer operating system
      4. Click on the “I agree to the….” at the bottom of the webpage for the license agreement
      5. Click on Download
      6. Follow the on-screen prompts

The system software should be update after the WebUpdater program is completed.

If that doesn’t work, try a hard reset, but you will lose all data. You can back it up first if you can copy the current.gpx file to your computer…

      Question: How do I perform a master reset on my nuvi 200, 205, 465, 500, 600, 700, 705 or 1000 series device?
      Answer:

      To perform a Master Reset on the nuvi 200, 205, 465, 500, 600, 700, 705, 1100, 1200, 1300, 1400 or 1600 series device:

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings. If you would like to back up your favorites you can find instructions to do so here.

      1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
      2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
      3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
      4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
      * You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
      5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
      6. Touch Yes

The device will automatically reset. Follow the on screen prompts then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

  3. How do I get my garmin 260W to verbalize the street names. All it seems to do is to tell me when to turn but no street names are spoken.

  4. JC Schneider says:

Just a quick question. If you could buy a Garmin 1450LMT or a Tom Tom XXL540
TM, which one would you buy (don’t factor cost, features and reliability only)?
    Thanks

  5. I bought a Garmin Nuvi 1350T August 2010. I notice that when I connect it to the Garmin website the site asks if I want to share the information on my GPS with them. I would have to be crazy to just indiscriminately share my travel details with a corporation. I am curious however as to how others feel about this issue. IMHO I think a great deal of the population doesn’t value privacy much anymore, and they spread their life’s intimate details all over the internet. Comments welcome…

    • This kind of data is supposed to be anonymized. Typically that’s done by not recording the first/last mile or two, though researchers have shown that this is often not enough or not done effectively.

  6. do you have gps trackers that can be programmed to find locations by using latitudes and longitudes?

EX: 179 degrees, 48 minutes and 56 seconds, but we need to go a bit further, like 56.34 seconds… I make up numbers here but seconds reading in 00.00 is what I mean.

    thank you.

  7. What Auto GPS units feature a male voice? With our old Magellan Roadmate 700 we could choose a male or female voice. Magellan no longer supports map upgrades for this ancient GPS, but we still use it because my husband has high-frequency deafness and can only hear a male voice. (And all these years I thought he was ignoring me!)

  8. Thank you for your review of GPS’ … Very useful!
I have never owned a GPS but am experienced w. map and compass in the back-country.
    Q. Can you recommend a unit that will work in both a car and on the ground for hiking?
Price: I don’t have a smart phone or tablet and cost is an issue. I can spend about $150 – 200 on a device. I was looking at the Garmin Nuvi 2455LT because it has maps covering US, Mexico and Canada installed and is about my price point. Useful, as I do go into Mexico on a regular basis. I also see I can get topo maps for the US from Garmin for about $100 … will this work on a unit that is designed for use in a car? Do car type GPS units run on batteries to extend the usage? If not a Garmin Nuvi 2455LT is there something else you’d suggest?

  9. Lewis Williamson says:

Forgive me for not knowing anything on GPS’s
Here is what I am looking for and I am not even sure such an item exists at an affordable price.
    1. GPS – dash mount or handheld
2.. Must be able to add custom waypoints
    3. Want to use on the road for traveling
    4. want to use on lake to mark fishing areas as well as landings. Must have water depth
    5. want to use on farm to mark rocks in fields, property lines etc
    6. Do mot want to spend my months wages to get one

I know this is a huge order and I am not even sure it is realistic but wanted to ask and get any advice I can. Thanks!! Lewis

  10. Great website with a lot of information!

A question for you. I have a 3 year old Garmin 765T that the battery no longer holds a charge.

Do you have any experience with after market replacement batteries? Can you recommend one? Thanks!

  11. Got a question on a Garmin 2595LMT. If i plug a cable from the gps into my usb port in my prius will the voice on the gps go through my sound sytem?

  12. After learning about the Map Module in Adobe’s Lightroom 4, I wondered what portable GPS unit would be needed to create a tracklog that could then be loaded into Lightroom. Because this will be the primary function (maybe the only function) for having such a device, I certainly don’t want to spend any more than I have to.
    Suggestions?

  13. Which models still offer male voices? I prefer Austrailian, but at this point will take anything short of Ozzie Osborne, Just bought a 2555LM. So far this is my only complaint.

  14. Given the apparent demise of everytrail.com do you have any suggestions for other similar apps to use?

  15. i admire your dedication and the astronomous amount of work you’ve put onto this.

  16. I’m looking to buy a handheld GPS for data collection. I need something that is accurate to 1 meter +/-. I find it very difficult to get the accuracy info on most units online.

    Any recommendations?

  17. Hate to be a pain, but I erased the maps in a Nuvi 205w. Is there a source, if any, that might have the pre-loaded maps for 2010 models?

  18. You have put some great effort into this, keep it up
