You might recall that midway through last year the owner company of SPOT LLC, Globalstar, celebrated their 3,000th rescue since the company was founded in 2007. Globally, SPOT averages about one rescue per day, and they are probably one of the most well-known and trusted brands for satellite communication and tracking across the globe. If you are an active outdoors enthusiast or you frequently travel alone and you don’t have one, you probably should.

More recently, SPOT announced that they assisted in the rescue of around 600 people in 2014–500 of which were in North America. Currently, they are at around 3,400 rescues overall, and the company couldn’t be more proud.

“Continuously saving lives drives us to keep innovating satellite communications that reach a market well beyond traditional mobile satellite users,” said Jay Monroe, CEO and Chairman of Globalstar in a press release.

SPOT’s most popular devices include:

  • SPOT Gen3 – This rugged device provides off-the-grid messaging, emergency alerts, excellent battery life and ‘extreme GPS tracking.’ You can buy one here for around $150.
  • SPOT Global Phone – This is an affordable satellite phone powered by both satellites and Globalstar’s network. You can buy one here for around $500.
  • SPOT Trace – This GPS tracking device is designed to help users track belongings all over the globe. You can buy one here for around $100.

As a note, SPOT emergency rescue services do require monthly or yearly service plans but they are not super expensive and would be well worth the money if you ever needed the service. To get more information about SPOT devices, visit their website.
