New GPS Sport Watch with Connected Devices Announced

Suunto Ambit3 family GPS Watch App Heart Monitor

Suunto has announced a whole family of connected devices to help athletes and outdoors enthusiasts get the most out of their sports adventures. Suunto’s first Bluetooth Smart compatible product family consists of a new Suunto Movescount App, Suunto Ambit3 Peak GPS Watch and Suunto Ambit3 Sport GPS watch, and the Suunto Smart Sensor for heart rate monitoring. The device family can either be used together or separately, and will be available for purchase in the beginning of September, 2014. Details on price have not yet been released.

Suunto Movescount App

The Suunto Movescount App is designed for iOS systems, with Android compatibility expected later. It can be used in conjunction with other Suunto products or as a standalone app, making it the heart of the new connected product line. The app will allow users to track adventures and take photos showing real-time speed, distance and other details. You can turn your data into a “Suunto Movie” – an animation of your journey visualized with a 3D map, where highlights and photos of the adventure are embedded along the track. Post your own movies on social media and challenge you friends.

Check out this example of a Suunto movie of Kilian Jornet’s recent record ascent of Denali:

The Suunto Movescount App can be paired with the Ambit3 watches, turning them into multifunctional smart watches that can wirelessly upload your moves, change watch settings, and keep time and GPS data updated. You can also receive call and text notifications on the watch.

Suunto Ambit GPS Watch

Suunto Ambit3 GPS WatchThe Ambit3 GPS Watches are optimized for sports and adventures. Both the Ambit3 Sport and the Ambit3 Peak are designed to be used for cycling, running, swimming or multisport training. Both watches have GPS technology that provides accurate pace, route navigation and tracking and can pair with the heart rate monitor to help you train.

The Ambit3 Peak is the top of the line in the new Ambit3 product family.

If you are looking for a more serious outdoor experience, the Ambit3 Peak also features Suunto’s hallmark outdoor functions such as barometric information, altimeter with FusedAltiTM, a 3D compass and other outdoor specific features. The rugged watch has a glass fiber reinforced casing and a stainless steel bezel. For added durability, you can order the Ambit3 Peak Sapphire edition, which comes with sapphire crystal glass. The Peak has ridiculous battery life, and the press release claims it can last up to 50 hours in GPS mode

Suunto Smart Sensor

The third and final part of this connected workout gear, the Suunto Smart Sensor is the smallest Bluetooth Smart compatible heart rate sensor on the market. Using Movesense technology, the new Suunto Smart Sensor can be attached to the new Suunto heart rate belt, or to compatible sports apparel.  The Smart Sensor is designed to let you record heart rate from your swims and will store information while you are in the water, wirelessly transferring to your Ambit3 watch or Movescount App when you are drying off. The Suunto Smart Sensor and belt will be included in the Ambit3 Peak and Ambit3 Sport HR versions, but can also be purchased separately and used with the Suunto Movescount App or other Bluetooth® Smart compatible devices.
