Magellan eXplorist TOPO editions announced

Magellan eXplorist 510_TOPO Special EditionMagellan has announced eXplorist 310 and 510 Topo Editions (the latter is pictured above), which will come bundled with a one-year subscription to National Geographic TOPO, offering 1:24,000 and 1:100,000 scale USGS-based topos. According to the news release, you will also be able to “view a unique collection of road and trail data that shows a complete network of back roads and trails on a national scale.”

We learned back in  May that Magellan had swung a deal with National Geographic to allow downloads to the newer Magellan eXplorist mapping handhelds. These are the first units to come bundled with the service, which will run $29.99 after the first year.

I’ve reviewed the eXplorist 310 (and 710), but not the 510, so I’ll try to nail down a review unit with the topo bundle and let you know what I think. UPDATE: Done! Here’s my Magellan eXplorist 510 review.

Here’s the full news release.
