One of the more popular handheld GPS units over the years has been the versatile Rino line created by Garmin, undoubtedly the most popular GPS maker in the world. Part GPS satellite navigation and part walkie-talkie, the Rino products are excellent for any outdoorsman looking for a bit of extra protection while on the trail with friends. So I have to say I was pretty excited to see that on Friday Garmin announced that it will be releasing a new Rino product this summer, the Rino 650t.
In line with previous Rino products, the 650t features a built-in 5-watt FRS/GMRS radio which allows communication of up to two miles over FRS and 20 miles of GMRS, allowing users to communicate with the touch of a button and send their exact GPS location to other Rino users with the Position Reporting Feature. Short text messages relaying information like waypoints, routes, tracks and more is also supported through ANT+ with other compatible Garmin units. read more
Polar, an active training technology company, has announced the upcoming availability of its newest unit, a GPS cycling computer. The M450 features a small, lightweight and splash proof design with a smart visibility LED light and various personalized training meters and metrics to suit everyone, regardless of skill or fitness level.

Just about every handheld top 10 features at least one, if not more, of Garmin’s eTrex line. These durable and affordable devices are incredibly popular, so it’s no surprise that Garmin has finally announced the next-generation eTrex devices: the eTrex 20x and 30x. The new eTrex units are expected to be available this summer and will share many features with the original eTrex line including the simple, easy-to-use interface. read more
TomTom announced late last week that it has partnered with Nike again to bring compatibility with the Nike+ Running App to various TomTom GPS Sport Watches. The press release didn’t list out specific TomTom watches, so I would assume this update provides compatibility to pretty much all of TomTom’s newer GPS Sports Watch line including the TomTom Runner and the TomTom Runner Cardio.
“This is the next step in a partnership with Nike that began in 2011 with the launch of the Nike+ Sportwatch, which was powered by TomTom,” said Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director and Founder, TomTom Consumer in a statement. “We’re excited to add an industry-leader like Nike+ to the list of platforms available to TomTom users.” read more

Garmin International Inc. has announced the upcoming release of their lightweight Approach S5 GPS Golf Watch, expected to be available in Q1 2015. This watch has a beautiful color touchscreen and all of the standard GPS Golf features that you would expect from Garmin. The watch will retail for around $350 at specialty golf retailers and golf pro shops.
This handy little device has pretty much all the basic features that one would expect from a GPS powerhouse like Garmin including Course View mapping with more than 38,000 international courses pre-loaded on the device and free lifetime updates. Golfers can preview hole details and see the layout of the green with the creatively named GreenView, and Touch Targeting provides accurate measurements with a drag and drop feature to measure any distance on the course. read more
Epson America, long known for their inkjet printers has firmly stepped away from printing and into the world of GPS with the launch of several new trackers runners. And, as if intent to banish the thought of printers from the mind, Epson has created an entirely new brand dubbed “Epson Active” which is host to several new and existing Epson fitness and wearable devices including the Pulsense fitness tracker, which was released last year.
Most recently, at the 2015 International Consumer Electronics Show last week, Epson America debuted their newest Runsense GPS Sports monitors which are designed for runners, walkers and fitness enthusiasts. The device has been optimized primarily for runners and is designed to help serious enthusiasts measure their strides and pace. However, it also can measure a range of different measurements including continuous heart rate, time elapsed, distance, pace, laps, intervals, speed, calories burned and many more directly from the wrist without requiring an uncomfortable chest strap. read more
Garmin has finally released details about their newest multisport GPS watch, the Fēnix 3. This awesome watch does, well, everything, and is clearly Garmin’s reponse to the concern that GPS watches are in danger of being replaced by smartwatches. And I have to say, while the watch is a little pricey, it definitely sounds like its worth it.
The watch itself isn’t expected to be available until sometime in the first quarter of this year, and will retail in the $499 – $599 range, depending on which version you buy. The Fēnix 3 will be available in gray and silver with a premium sapphire edition with a sapphire glass screen.
As far as specs, well, this little beauty basically does a little bit of everything, and I can only hope that I’ll be able to get my hands on one to try it out. Keep your fingers crossed! Anyway, here are the details Garmin gave me about the device: read more
So, I have to admit I’m not much of a surfer. I don’t live near the ocean, so the idea of tracking your surfing with GPS seems a little odd to me. However, this product has had some pretty good reception, so I thought I’d take a sec to cover it anyway. The watch is basically the surfing equivalent of a GPS running watch, with tons of measurements and stats recorded and then synced to your phone. read more
