Upgrade your Magellan 2200T to a CrossoverGPS

Crossovergps
Magellan has announced a $49 upgrade option to convert your RoadMate 2200T to a CrossoverGPS. From the press release (additional commentary below):

The CrossoverGPS upgrade creates an outdoor navigation mode in the Magellan RoadMate 2200T to help users find their way through land areas without streets by using the latitude and longitude for geographical locations. The upgrade equips the Magellan RoadMate with topographic contour maps and easy-to-use functions including the ability to create and go to waypoints and routes or backtrack. The upgrade also provides a compass screen and the ability to save a base camp location. The integrated battery lasts up to eight hours for extended cord-free operation during outdoor activities.

The CrossoverGPS upgrade also gives users the flexibility of loading additional mapping software for boating and land activities to the Magellan RoadMate 2200T through optional memory cards. Users can load marine charts, lakes data with fishing hot spots and additional topographic detail, currently available at www.magellanGPS.com.

That last part concerns me. When the Magellan RoadMate 2200T was originally announced, Magellan said you could add topo and marine maps through the SD slot. Now it sounds like you have to buy the upgrade! They didn’t say you could just add a MapSend topo or marine card, but it sure was easy to read it that way.

  3. Mike,
I checked their website too and couldn’t find it anywhere. Have you tried calling them?

  4. Amy Guilfoile says:

I called them and got nothing but frustrated after an hour on the phone. Their customer service and tech support is terrible. I did finally get a response by email on Jan. 17 that I’ve posted below, although they didn’t answer my question of how do you order it…
“Thank you for taking the time to send your e-mail. At this time the upgrade is still under going last minute testing prior to its release. I would estimate another two to three weeks before the upgrade is made available. The upgrade will be made available in form of a CD that will be mailed to the customer. We apologize for the delay but Magellan wants to insure the upgrade is fully tested prior to making it available for purchase.”

  5. Thanks Amy. You’re right, Magellan has a horrible reputation when it comes to customer service.

I had checked the website and had seen the page referred to above about the upgrade “coming soon”. Now the website link takes you to a page that says “software not available”. I thought maybe they had canceled it, so I sent them an email. Here’s the response.

  12. Thanks Mark. That’s helpful to know.
I’m always surprised when manufacturers make such premature announcements. I mean, come on, it’s been over three months since they said this was going to be an option.

  13. Got this reponse yesterday:

  14. I called customer support today 6/4/2007 and the representative said that the crossover upgrade for the 2200T would be available in 3 to 4 months. WOW, Magellan has been hyping this ‘upgrade’ feature since December 2006, and now it could take as long as September/October 2007 before it is released.
Something smells fishy? Either they are expreinceing technical issues with the hardware or they have lost all control of the development process or they are deliberately postponing the release of this upgrade as not to negatively impact sales of the 2500T? No matter what the problem, this 2200T owners patience is running thin.
Magellan’s decision to farm out technical/customer support to India suggests that programming has probably been farmed out to India as well. My experience with other products developed utilizing India resources has been that the quality control is poor and resolution of bugs/problems is an excruciatingly slow process.
The pinheads making these kind of decisions need to know that they are taking a huge risk. Brand deterioration through poor customer experiences is not an acceptable trade off for bottom-line cost savings. Magellan has historically been known for its quality, however my experience (as well many others I have read)with the 2200T suggests that this company is headed in a different direction.
Get your act together, and get it together soon Magellan!
Sorry for the long post, however it is intended for both the consumer/potential consumer and Magellan.

  15. Wow! I think Garmin has gotten better at over-promising and under-delivering, while Magellan has gotten worse!

  16. I think they held out the upgrade because of the 2500T. In my opinion, the Crossover upgrade is exactly what they have in the 2500T. Yup! I think the 2500T is nothing but the 2200T with the Crossover upgrade. So if they release it, there is no reason to buy the 2500T at around $400.00 when you can get the 2200T with the upgrade for $300.00. I agree with Gandalf that this strategy might back fire for Magellan. I have stopped recommend this GPS to my friends couple months ago when I realize this is what they are doing. I hope other manufacturers would made the crossovers. This might be the only way to get Magellan to get moving on the crossover upgrade.

  17. For moderator, DO NOT POST!
Placing the posters name/date after the post is confusing.
It makes the next post appear as being authored by the previous poster?
You may consider either place the horizontal bar after the posters name/date or place the posters name/date before the post.
    Just a thought…

  18. Here are my thoughts concerning Magellan and the crossover upgrade debacle.
    1. Magellan should release the upgrade immediately! If they cannot then they need to fire the company developing the upgrade (even if its Magellan themselves) and hire a firm capable of doing so.
    2. Magellan should make the upgrade available for FREE to customers that have already purchased the 2200T. Consumers have been miss led by published comments from Magellan (‘soon’ does not equal 6+ months). As for this 2200T owner, my purchase was based on the fact that it was upgradeable to the crossover.
    3. If the upgrade is not available within 30 days, 2200T owners should be able to return their 2200T’s for a 2500T, free of charge.
Any other 2200T owners out there with me?
Let your voices be heard, it appears at this point, it is all we have 🙁

  19. Looks like I was very generous when I stated that Magellan was hyping the Crossover Upgrade since December 2006, actually they have been at it since September 2006 http://www.magellangps.com/news/releases/viewRelease.asp?id=502.
    And still no Crossover upgrade.
    Simply unbelievable!

  20. Dick Haney says:

Just bought the 2200T at COSTCO because the box says “Crossover GPS Upgradeable”…now I find out that’s a lie. It’s going right back to COSTCO.

  21. Dick Haney says:

BTW, the Crossover GPS is available online at COSTCO at $350 for a limited time.

  22. I bought the 2200T with the understanding that it could also have the Cross over added to it but doesn’t look like that is going to happen anytime soon.
I was told that it would be here before the summer hiking season and appears to be the big lie. May be time to return it to Costco for a refund.

  23. BuffaloM says:

Even though the topo maps aren’t available yet to buy. Is there a way I can make my own topomap for a park I’m going to in a few weeks? I don’t need the whole country, just about a hundred square miles, so if theres a way to make my own map from the USGS data, I think that I might go with the 2200T instead of a 60CSx

  24. You can create maps in Magellan’s format. I’m not sure about moving them to the 2200. Here are a couple of references…
    http://www.msh-tools.com/
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mobilemapper2/

  25. Magellan must be in damage control now because they have removed the press release mentioned above from their site. Either that or it has timed out and was automatically removed(after all it is 9 months old).
I called tech support yesterday and they said that Magellan has never claimed that the Crossover Upgrade will be available for the 2200T, they only stated that it “may” be available “sometime” in the future. I told the representative that that was incorrect and check out the original press release from Magellan but that has now mysteriously disappeared.
    What a spectacle…

  26. If it weren’t so sad, that would be downright hilarious.

  27. K. Barry says:

Count me amongst those who decided to buy the 2200T over other choices based on the advertised feature of “CrossoverGPS Upgradeable” (It says so right on the back of the box!). I am a little disappointed that it sounds like they are quietly backing out of this promise. Every press release and CES 2007 coverage article I read prior to my purchase indicated this upgrade was real and ready for release. At this point in time, it would take a major act of good faith from Magellan to the current 2200T owners to influence me to purchase or recommend a Magellan product again.

  28. May I suggest everyone who bought the 2200T register their product at Magellan then make a support request that Magellan make the Crossover upgrade available?

  29. M. Stoner says:

I just spoke with customer support and was told that the crossover upgrade is just finishing up testing and will be available within 2-3 weeks at most. Keep your fingers crossed…

  30. Look at the third post in this thread dated Feb. 02, Magellan said the very same thing, 2-3 weeks.
Lets use one of those wordy junior high math questions as an analogy.
My bank calls me Feb. 02 and asks why my car payment is late. I tell them , don’t worry, the payment will be available in 2-3 weeks. At what date do I transition from motorist to pedestrian?

  31. Look at the third post in this thread dated Feb. 02, Magellan said the very same thing, 2-3 weeks.

  32. I called customer support today and now they say that the Crossover upgrade will not be available until the first quarter 2008.
I consider myself a pretty savvy consumer and can’t believe I find myself here in a bait and switch sucker play with a company the size of Magellan.
The only thing that Magellan has been consistent with regarding this upgrade is misleading the consumer.
This is FRAUD, any way you slice it.
I’m done calling Magellan’s customer support only to be lied to. If someone knows how to start a class action lawsuit, or knows a way to get law enforcement involved, let me know. At this point it is not about my loss, this corporation needs to be held accountable!

  33. Can we start something like a mailing list with cheated owners would register and provide information such as name, city, and serial number. Then if the list got reasonably long, we can show the list to Magellan and get like a journalist/better business bureau involved, and as the last measure, get a class action attorney involved? I hate class action because often it is just a lawyer scam itself.

  34. This is disappointing. I’m glad this is being discussed here as I would have spent more time searching for this elusive “crossover upgrade”. Add me to the count!

  35. Good point HOA. I think that the BBB would be a great place to start. I will research tomorrow and post my results.

  36. Hello, I created a mailing list (newsgroup) at Yahoo, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/2200TIssues/. Everyone is free to register to become a member and register your gripe about Magellan 2200T. I also created a file of members name, city and serial numbers. I think we need these to have a legitimate voice with Magellan. So far there is 1 name on that list (me!). I will put in the serial number when I got home today. Everything else in this group is open. You don’t have to join to read the messages. But I made the name, city, serial number file to be modified only by the moderator to keep its integrity. So, please go the webpage above, join the group, email me (moderator) to sign your name, city, serial number up and let’s have a voice. Please also ask anyone else you know having 2200T to join. If we have at least 100 members, I think we can do something… If you have any question, send me an email at [email protected] or here, or at the newsgroup.

  37. I’d like to write a follow-up post on this, but I’m waiting for comment from Magellan. I wrote my contact there yesterday. Stay tuned.

  38. So far we have 1 other signed up to
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/2200TIssues/ beside myself. I think I can search through the internet to find other groups, blogs etc… and invite more to join. But I think I would like to see at least 5 or 10 from this group signed up first. Besides, it should be a group effort. We need to at least 5 or 10 to discuss and vote for what next step to be taken. I think it is clear enough that Magellan is playing game with the 2200T Crossover upgrade. To change their behavior, a collective voice therefore is needed.

  39. I am ashamed to say I purchased a 2200T in February and imediately attempted to aquire the advertised upgrade. I have contacted Magellan by phone and e-mail on seven or eight occasions. I was lied to on each contact with the company. On three seperate calls since I was told availability would be within a month. The other times it was 2-3 weeks, finalizing, very soon now, and other bogus info in a foreign dialect. Count me in on any action that is to be taken against Magellan.

  40. Hello, I would like to copy the comments in this weblog to the 2200TIssues newsgroup at Yahoo. If there is any objection from anyone here or from this weblog owner, please let me know. I don’t know how long will this weblog stay. I think it is important to save the records of the 2200T owner who are looking for the Crossover upgrade in vain in case a claim is made to Magellan regarding to their failed promise. But I do respect the rights of the people who post their comments here and the rights of the weblog owner. So let me know if there is any objection or any suggestion.

  41. Hoa,
I think that’s okay. I would suggest that you use initials or first name, last initial, so as not to place the full name of anyone there who hasn’t signed up for the group. Good luck and please keep us posted here on any major developments.

  42. BBB Reporting…
I was able to file a complaint with the BBB (Better Business Bureau). Here is a link to the BBB serving Santa Clara, CA where Magellan Corporate Headquarters is based. http://www.bbbsilicon.org/commonreport.html?bid=214758&language=1&hr=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5iYmJzaWxpY29uLm9yZy9jb21tb25yZXN1bHRzLmh0bWw=&hr=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5iYmJzaWxpY29uLm9yZy9jb21tb25yZXN1bHRzLmh0bWw= .
Click the link above and type in the security code, it will take you to the Magellan listing. On the left hand side of the page you will find a “File a Complaint” button. Click the button and follow the prompts.
I choose the “Advertising Issues” category then “1-101 Advertisement Misrepresented Product” however fill out the complaint as you see fit.
A few things to keep in mind.
    1. Magellan is not a member of the BBB, however this does not prevent complaints from being filed. The BBB;s will still process the complaint and forward it to the company.
    2. If enough of the 2200T consumers file complaints it will apply additional pressure on Magellan to honestly address this issue.
    Have a great 4th!

  43. I did. Thanks for the info.

  44. Just filed a complaint with the BBB… I like Magellan, and I think the 2200T is a great Nav product, I just wish they would follow through on the CrossoverGPS deal.

  45. Randy Horner says:

I just called technical support and got the ‘will be released in the near future’ answer. I told them I had been reading web logs where I learned that this has been going on for months, and I then asked the customer service guy of what exactly was the definition of ‘near future’. I told them I was returning my product and I would never buy Magellan again.
He called my house later that day and left a message that he had new info.
I just called back and they told me the crossover upgrade is being released on July 20th and will be available on the website on that date.
    -Randy Horner
    [email protected]

  46. Thanks Randy. I’ve got it marked on my calendar, so we’ll see if it happens.

  47. It is good to see that Magellan has firmed up a release date, however given Magellan’s track record regarding release projections, I am highly sceptical (and I’m a glass half full thinker).
Rich, did you receive a response from your contact within Magellan regarding this?

  48. No, I never heard back from them. I guess we’ll know in a week.

  49. Until July 20, is there any way to view LAT/LONG on the 2200T?
I just bought one at Costco – for the same reason, I read the ad on the box, came home and tried to find the upgrade…..
    Thanks

  50. I got a 2200T, from COSTCO. I like to know if COSTCO will take it back if you are not happy with the product. On the box it states not to return to store , but to call their tech. support dept. HAS ANYONE RETURN THE GPS 2000T TO COSTCO WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS????
