Garmin eTrex H review

Garmin_etrex_h_review

UPDATE: We recommend the newer eTrex 10 instead of this model.

UPDATE: This model has been discontinued. For more current recommendations, please refer to our handheld GPS buyers guide or our Garmin handheld GPS comparison chart.

The Garmin eTrex H updates the basic yellow Garmin eTrex. A great first GPS for the budget-minded geocacher or hiker, this classic has been updated with a high-sensitivity chipset for superior reception under canopy and in other difficult conditions.

Three things to be aware of when you buy the eTrex H. First, unlike other members of the eTrex H-series, you cannot load detailed maps to this unit. The “map” screen, as shown a little further down, only shows your track and any waypoints you’ve created.

Second, this unit does not come with a cable to transfer waypoints from your computer. You must buy it separately or enter waypoint coordinates manually, which creates plenty of opportunities for error. I highly recommend the purchase of a cable if you choose this model.

Better yet, pay a tiny bit more and go with the next model up, the eTrex Venture HC, which adds a cable, sunlight-readable color screen, and the ability to accept detailed maps.

Third, the eTrex H does not have the click-stick of the other models in the newest eTrex series, and the interface is going to be more of a pain to use.

To see how the eTrex H stands up against other Garmin models, check out my Garmin handheld GPS comparison chart.

  2. Can this Garmin e-Trex H can display latitude and longitude value in decimal or minutes degree and seconds?

Please any one can suggest me.

Yes, almost any handheld GPS will offer multiple formats. But if you are going to want to transfer them to or from the GPS, I’d recommend a model with a USB interface instead of serial.

  4. Hello Rich,

I live in the Uk and doing a long distance event in East Africa. The Organisers provide the GPs Co-ordinates for the route we will be following. The GPS is really just to make sure that we don’t go off the track and that we are headed in the correct ‘way point’ direction.

Will a this GPS Etrex 10 / 20 or 30 work in East Africa?
