Garmin has announced the tactix, a GPS watch “inspired by the requirements of Law Enforcement and Police Special Operations.” The ABC watch features an altimeter, barometer and triaxial compass, is waterproof to 50 meters and can run up to 50 hours in UltraTrac mode on a single charge (16 hours in full GPS mode). read more

Traffic: TomTom vs Garmin

Last week, TomTom announced the results of a University of Michigan study that “concluded that TomTom’s iPhone Navigation App and GO 2535 Portable Navigation Device provide the most accurate real-time traffic data, when compared to a number of competing products.” As I pointed out in my weekly link roundup, TomTom paid for the study (full PDF report available here), which raises questions of bias. Now we have Garmin’s take on it: read more

Garmin ventures into smartwatch territory with their new Approach S4 for golfers

Garmin has announced the Approach S4 golf sportswatch, adding a high-resolution touchscreen interface and the ability to receive notifications from a compatible paired iPhone (iPhone 4s and above running iOS7.0 and above) using Bluetooth Low Energy technology. Those notifications, which include the ability to display texts and emails, make for a very attractive feature and one that has Garmin treading into smartwatch territory. There’s no word yet on plans to bring this feature set to Android. read more
