GPS predictions for 2012

2012 GPS predictionsAs I’ve been doing in recent years, I’ll play the fool once again, by trying to predict what we’ll see in the GPS industry over the next twelve months. I’m certainly being a bit more cautious than the first couple of times I did this, but it also seems harder to predict things now; I don’t know if that is due to the advent of mobile or because so many of the obvious improvements have been made or for some other reason. I‘m also posting this earlier than in past years, since I’m expecting CES news releases that are under embargo to start hitting my inbox any day, and I don’t want to feel limited in what I can say here.

Use TeleNav on your phone without an app

TeleNav HTML5 navigationThis is interesting. TeleNav has announced the world’s first HTML5 navigation service. What this means is that a developer can let you click on an address, in an app or on a website, to launch a free browser-based, turn-by-turn navigation service with voice directions. You won’t need to have the TeleNav app on your phone and it won’t rely on other maps your phone may have access to, such as Google Maps. The public launch is slated for early next year, but they’re already letting developers test the service. Pretty cool, huh?

Garmin Edge 200 review

Garmin Edge 200

Hands on with the Garmin Edge 200

Before I got into GPS I used cyclometers to tell me how far I had gone on my mountain bike, which was very helpful when a trail description said something like “watch for hidden trail on left after 3.2 miles!” They worked surprisingly well, although dealing with wires, strapping a magnet to the spokes and calibrating the whole setup was way too complex. Fortunately there’s a new kid in town, bringing GPS accuracy and new features without the need for wires, magnets or calibration. It’s the Garmin Edge 200, an entry-level GPS cyclometer from the company that has previously focused on higher-end cycling devices.

TomTom GO LIVE 1535M
