TomTom Announces Several New Business Deals

tomtom-logo_1
In the last few months, it seems like the only real news coming out of TomTom is in regard to business transactions, new partnerships and expanding of their mapping and navigation services instead of any actual GPS hardware or equipment. I’m not sure what spurred this change in the company outlook, but I suppose that you can’t debut new devices every week, right?

Anyway, in the last week TomTom has been in a partnership frenzy and has made four announcements about new business deals in Europe and Latin America. Rather than trying to expand on each one and bore you to death with empty quotes from TomTom officials, I’ve decided to just include a brief overview of them all in one post. read more

TomTom to Use Weather to Calculate Routes

U.K. based navigation company TomTom announced yesterday that they will now be including weather conditions when calculating routes for driving, enabling drivers faster routes, safer travels and the ability to arrive prepared for all weather. The weather alerts will tie in with the traffic jam information that TomTom already connects, informing drivers about upcoming slow areas due to heavy rain, snow, or washed out areas. read more

TomTom Continues to Expand Business

tomtom-logo_1It wasn’t too long ago that TomTom was THE name in GPS. If you had a dedicated GPS unit in your car, it was probably a TomTom. And, while TomTom is not quite as popular as they once were, it seems they aren’t planning on going anywhere. Today TomTom has announced that their TomTom Telematics unit has had a 47% year-on-year growth, with more than 30,000 customers, 400,000 vehicles and 395,000 subscriptions to their fleet management vehicle tracking software in Europe. That’s a lot of big numbers. If you look at their second quarter report, you’ll see what that really means is that TomTom may not have the majority of users in the dedicated GPS units market anymore, but they aren’t backing out of the GPS world either. read more

TomTom Runner GPS Watch review

TomTom Runner GPS Watch review

Hands on with the TomTom Runner GPS Watch

The TomTom Runner GPS Watch is the company’s latest offering within the running category after a few years of partnering with Nike. So it was a bit expected that they would be releasing a dedicated unit for runners. After 30 miles of outdoor running in December, it’s time to look at how it performed. read more

TomTom rolls out lifetime maps and traffic

We knew lifetime map updates were coming to some TomTom units, but an announcement today adds lifetime traffic to the mix and lets us know that lifetime traffic and/or lifetime map updates are now available on select TomTom XL and XXL models.

UPDATE: Amazon has pre-order pages up for several models, listed below. Release dates are April 26 for most units, with a few slipping into May. The ones with lifetime maps have an M; lifetime traffic  is denoted with a T, and I bet you can guess what it means when they have a TM (and no, it doesn’t stand for trademark).

TomTom to offer daily map updates?

Harold Goddijn TomTom CEO I’m never sure how much to trust Google Translate, but if they got this German article right, TomTom’s CEO Harold Goddijn (pictured) claims they will be offering map updates every day or two by the end of the year. It sounds like we are definitely moving towards connected devices with constantly updated maps. Here’s the translated quote:

TomTom XXL 530-S
UPDATE: This model has been discontinued. For a list of current TomTom models and their features, please see our TomTom comparison chart.

The TomTom XXL 530S is one of TomTom’s first 5” models. It comes with preloaded maps of the US and Canada and has IQ Routes, TomTom’s historical traffic speed data that can result in improved routing in areas prone to traffic problems. The “S” in the model name means that it has text-to-speech, so you’ll hear “turn right, Oak Street,” instead of just “turn right.”
