Magellan introduced three new device yesterday dubbed the RoadMate family. All three devices feature huge seven inch screens designed for safer driving and navigation in larger vehicles. With screens this size, the days of squinting at the map while driving down the road are long past.
The three new devices introduced are the RoadMate 9400-LM, 9412T-LM and 9465T-LMB. All three have brightly colored touchscreen displays and spoken street names. Here are some of the other features the GPS family shares:
Magellan has announced the increased availability of their SmartGPS 5390 unit, designed to create a connected car experience with enhanced navigation. It is available now at BestBuy.com, Costco.com, Amazon.com, and magellangps.com for $229.99.
Featuring a sleek and stylish appearance, the Magellan SmartGPS 5390 is designed to let users have the connected car experience without the price tag. The device displays locations of lowest gas prices, Foursquare/Yelp user reviews of POIs, red-light camera alerts, weather and traffic reports, and automatic cloud syncing to add contacts and destinations to your device. Magellan has announced the availability of the new RoadMade RV9490T-LMB. This seven inch Android-powered RV GPS device has smartphone and cloud integration to provide real-time information while on the road. The device features trip-planning abilities and several RV-friendly functions, such as:
- Vehicle Profile – Customizable RV routes based on your vehicle type, dimensions and driving preferences
- POIs designed specifically for RVs – pre-loaded POIs include Good Sam RV Travel Guide & Campground Directory, Fuel stations and Sani-Dump Stations in addition to normal POIs like restaurants and grocery stores.
- Geotag Navigation – The ability to input Geotag information (latitude/longitude) information and navigate to your desired location
The device also features several of Magellan’s latest safety features including customizable driving alerts to notify drivers of speed limits, yellow warning signs, toll plaza alerts, speed camera and traffic camera alerts; Junction View and Lane Assist guidance; Landmark Guidance, where directions are given using easy-to-spot landmarks; Next Two-Turn Visibility to help you know which lane to be in; and more.
Magellan has announced their first Android-based personal navigation device (PND), the 5″ Magellan RoadMate 5430T-LM. Previous RoadMates have used Windows CE as the underlying operating system. read more
Looks like Magellan wants to get into the dash cam act too, albeit with a twist. Rather than a standalone unit like the one announced by Garmin this morning, Magellan has opted to add one to a PND, the RoadMate 6230T-LM PND DashCam. read more
Magellan has announced the 7″ RoadMate RV9490T-LMB, which offers live weather and gas prices via a Bluetooth connection to a smartphone. Information can also be preloaded via WiFi. read more

It’s no secret that GPS manufacturers are trying to figure out how to respond to the threat of smartphones. One way is to embrace them, giving us a large screen navigation device while using the smartphone for connectivity. We saw that last year with Garmin’s Smartphone Link app, which unfortunately remains Android only, leaving iPhone users out in the cold. Today Magellan has stepped into the fray with the Magellan SmartGPS, which can utilize a free companion iOS and Android app to bring all sorts of info to this 5″ navigator. The app will also allow for advanced route planning from your smartphone or tablet. read more
