It’s no secret that GPS manufacturers are trying to figure out how to respond to the threat of smartphones. One way is to embrace them, giving us a large screen navigation device while using the smartphone for connectivity. We saw that last year with Garmin’s Smartphone Link app, which unfortunately remains Android only, leaving iPhone users out in the cold. Today Magellan has stepped into the fray with the Magellan SmartGPS, which can utilize a free companion iOS and Android app to bring all sorts of info to this 5″ navigator. The app will also allow for advanced route planning from your smartphone or tablet. read more

Magellan announces new top of line RoadMate 9250T-LMB

Magellan RoadMate 9250T-LMBMagellan has announced yet another 7″ monster, this time with pretty much their entire line of features. The Magellan RoadMate 9250T-LMB will include lifetime maps, traffic, Landmark Guidance and Bluetooth Safe Texting. It is backup camera compatible, carries an MSRP of $229.99 and is expected to be available later this month from BestBuy.com. read more

The Magellan RoadMate 5230T-LM is a new (mid-2012) high-end navigator with a 5″ touchscreen, featuring Landmark Guidance. This will give you instructions like “turn left at McDonald’s on Highway 112″ instead of just “turn left on Highway 112.” It also offers lifetime map updates and live traffic, along with a year’s subscription to traffic camera alerts. New Magellan RoadMates bring safe texting and portrait mode

Magellan has annouced five new RoadMates featuring Landmark Guidance, portrait mode and, in the two Bluetooth models, safe texting. This feature, highlighted in the video above, “enables drivers to quickly and safely respond to a call with a pre-written text message. The driver may select from a text message to inform the caller that they are driving and will call them later or a text that will include the vehicle’s present location and estimated time of arrival to their destination.” read more
