Hands on with the WiFi-enabled Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM

UPDATE: I’ve added a response from Magellan.

The Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM is a new unit from Magellan, whose most notable feature is WiFi, so I’ll focus on that in my review. It has a 5” screen with accelerometer, allowing you to use it in landscape or portrait orientation. And as the T-LM implies, it comes with traffic and lifetime map updates.

WiFi Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM emerges

MRM5175T-LM-Vertical

UPDATE: Read my hands on review of the Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM.

If Garmin won’t follow up on the success of their WiFi-enabled nuvi 295W, Magellan certainly will. That’s right, the new Magellan RoadMate 5175T-LM offers WiFi and a Web browser. Besides that, you’ll get the ability to switch between portrait and landscape modes, a 5” screen, lifetime map updates and traffic, and a new feature called Tour Director. The latter presumes to know how long the kids will want to stay at Disneyland! MSRP is $299.99; we don’t have any word on availability but we’re betting it will be hitting store shelves soon. Four new Magellan RoadMates with lifetime maps

Magellan-RoadMate-2036T-LMMagellan has quietly rolled out several new RoadMates with lifetime map updates, making a big deal out of only one of them, the RoadMate 9055-LM, which appears to be their new top of the line 7” model. Most are just beginning to hit the market. One other item of note – the 2136T-LM is the first Magellan to display speed limits, which are “optionally displayed with or without warnings.” No word on whether it can be customized for the warnings to go off when you exceed the speed limit by a configurable amount.
