New Mars Map is Most Detailed Map Yet

So, I know this isn’t REALLY related to GPS (more just geology, really), but I saw this news story and just had to share it.

The U.S. Geological Survey has released a new map of Mars, with breathtaking detail and a fountain of useful information for future Mars residents. According to this article, the scientists who released the map were able to get such detail through combining years of information—more than 600 million individual altitude measurements—to map out the topography and geography of the red planet. read more

US, Russia Still Arguing Over GLONASS Station

As you may be aware, Russia has been making rapid movements to expand and improve its GLONASS system to be a viable alternative to U.S. GPS systems. Earlier this year, Russia requested the permission to build a GLONASS station on U.S. soil and the U.S., unsurprisingly, refused on national security grounds. (Of course, we currently have several GPS stations built on Russian soil, but that’s beside the point, right?) read more

Civilian Anti-Jamming GPS Technology Coming Soon

As GPS becomes more and more a part of everyday life, the worry of GPS jamming disrupting the system grows greater. Military research has resulted in several high-tech solutions to the problem: but what about the civilian market? Chemring Technology Solutions has announced the development of the world’s first miniaturized GPS anti-jamming chip, called GINCAN. The device is based on military solutions to the problem, but is small enough to be used in a range of devices from cell phones and handheld devices to in-vehicle GPS systems. It will be compatible with both GPS and Galileo systems. read more

Amazon Seeking Permission to Test Drones Outdoors

We talked about this a few months ago, but in case you forgot, Amazon has been working on the idea of using drones to deliver packages weighing less than 5 lbs. to consumers. These PrimeAir drones, they claim, will be ready to launch in 2015 and will be able to deliver packages to consumers in 30 minutes–as opposed to waiting several days for the old-fashioned truck and delivery man to arrive.

Last week, Amazon announced they are now ready to conduct tests out of a lab setting and have applied with the Federal Aviation Administration for permission to test drones outdoors in their facility near Seattle. The U.S. has regulations about where drones may be tested as well as a complicated string of paperwork proving airworthiness and certifications to operate the drones, so no word yet whether or not it will be approved. read more

Minneapolis Introduces Park GPS Tracker for Guests

The Three Rivers Park District in Minn. now offers free GPS tracking for loved ones.

The Three Rivers Park District in Minneapolis, Minnesota has announced the launch of a GPS tracking system designed to help vulnerable guests from getting lost. The tracking system is designed to be used to allow visitors with autism, dementia, Alzheimer’s or other conditions that give patients a tendency to wander, the ability to visit the park system without worry of getting lost. The new system, Protect And Locate (or P.A.L.) is available at 26 park locations in the area. With this device, caretakers can set a perimeter and be alerted when the party leaves the area, allowing caretakers to find the patient in minutes instead of hours. The PAL system involves a bracelet for the vulnerable party and a monitor to track them for the caretaker. read more

LG Launches Wearable Tracking Device for Kids

LG is launching into the wearable technology market with no apologies and no reservations. The newest wearable GPS tracking device, KizON, was released in Korea on Thursday and is aimed at preschool and primary age kids. With GPS tracking capabilities and a simple button press to call a pre-selected number (or answer a call) the device is being marketed as a precautionary safety measure for small children and comes in three bright colors: pink, blue and green. Utilizing GPS and Wi-Fi, KizON can relay real-time location information to parents or caregivers and can be tracked on a phone or tablet. read more

Report Shows Wireless 911 Calls Lack Accurate GPS

We have written about how dedicated GPS units are more reliable than A-GPS from your phone in debates about navigation, geocaching and other topics. But when it comes to security and emergency response, it turns out cell phones fall short yet again.

A report from the Washington Post shows that 9 out of 10 cell phone calls in to 911 responders in D.C. didn’t report accurate location to emergency teams. The A-GPS found in most cell phones requires both a satellite lock and a cell phone signal, and it generally doesn’t work indoors. The result is a coarse location based on the nearest cell phone tower. Generally, this type of information is only accurate within several hundred meters of the actual location, which leaves emergency responders searching an area about the size of three or four city blocks to find someone. read more

MapQuest to Receive Upgrade with TomTom Maps

According to a press release, the GPS company TomTom has entered a multi-year partnership with AOL Inc. to power its core mapping services for AOL’s MapQuest, Inc. MapQuest users will now have access to TomTom’s extensive digital map database, across all digital platforms including MapQuest.com and its smartphone and tablet iOS and Android apps. read more

GPS Receiver Demonstrates Anti-Jamming Ability

With all the potential risks of GPS jamming and spoofing, officials all around the world have been researching methods of boosting their GPS signals and making them more accurate with technology like the eDLoran and anti-jamming chips. Now, according to a press release by Raytheon, the U.S. Air Force has demonstrated successful operation of its Military-code (M-code) GPS signal in a jamming environment using a Raytheon Company receiver.

In a recent test, the Miniaturized Airborne GPS Receiver 2000 (MAGR2K) maintained GPS satellite tracking and provided accurate navigation despite GPS jamming attempts. The MAGR2K was integrated with the Raytheon Advanced Digital Antenna Production (ADAP) system and equipped with a specialized M-code receiver card. read more

Researchers Investigate Scenic Route Options for GPS

New route options, such as most beautiful, quiet or happy paths may be coming to online mapping programs.

When you search for a route using your GPS device or an application like Google Maps, you have several options for what kind of a path you want—walking, cycling, fastest, shortest—but what if you could plot the most beautiful route as well? Yahoo Researchers have conducted a study proposing methods for selecting the most scenic route to get from point A to B instead of just the fastest.

“We find that, on average, the recommended paths are only 12% longer,” the study states. In  walking time, that would equal to about 7 minutes extra time in order to take the more scenic route.
