Compare Garmin nuvi models

Garmin nuvi reviewYou can compare Garmin nuvi models using the chart below, which is designed to help make sense of their myriad models. For a quick overview of the different series, you can also check out my dissecting the Garmin nuvi series post.

The links in the far left column below go to each Garmin nuvi review on our site. All listed models speak street names and include speed limit and trip log display. Discontinued nuvis are now listed in their own chart. You can also click here for descriptions and more information about various features. NEW: Click on column headers to sort chart.

Garmin nuvi feature descriptions

  • Live traffic – It may not be quite ready for prime time, but it is improving, especially for models with HD traffic. Even so, you can expect lots of inaccurate reports as well as incidents that aren’t reported. Most pre-2013 Garmin nuvis with a T following the model number have ad-supported traffic (see reviews for screenshots). HD models and 2013 T models are ad-free.
  • Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone use – Generally speaking, the sound quality has gotten much better on recent models, but check the reviews (the first column links to these) as it does vary.
  • Powered mount – The power cord plugs into the mount, rather than the GPS. That’s one less connection to fuss with when you want to use your navigator. I’m a big fan of these, especially when combined with a friction mount.
  • Multi-point (multi-destination) routing – A very nice feature, but not a critical one. If the chart says “no,” you can only enter one destination and one or two via points. This isn’t a big problem since you can easily find locations under Favorites or Recently Found.
  • Lifetime map updates – Garmin has started selling units bundled with lifetime map updates, which you can typically download quarterly. Newer models with these have an LM or LMT (the latter includes lifetime traffic) tacked onto the end of the model number.
  • Lane assist – Shows which lane you need to be in for Interstate exits and some surface streets in larger metros. An improved version, active lane guidance, was introduced on the 2013 Advanced and Prestige series.
  • Voice commands – A killer feature and it actually works pretty well on most models.

  1. Dear,
    I was using nuvi 1430 model, and now I’ve decided to go for Nuvi 2555 LMT or Nuvi 2595 LMT, however, I have some questions and looking for your kind advise;
    – which one is better 2555 or 2595?.
    – what is the meaning of (powered mount)?.
    – I have been told about the ads which announced on the screen of the GPS during driving, is this really true?, and doesn’t this considered as hazardous for the traveler which might cause of passing the correct exit / entrance during the ads?
    Regards

Just bought the 2595LMT and it lacks the ability to operate off the PC (attach device and input 100 addresses using the PC keyboard) and search starting with “town” avoiding scroll-down town menu. Looking for a Garmin with the following, hope u can help: Route optimization, screens similar to the 50, ability to operate off PC, Bluetooth, liftetime maps, traffic (nice but not necessary); 5-inch. Can be discontinued but available. Is there such an animal?

    • You can input addresses on a PC with any nuvi, using Garmin’s free BaseCamp program and their City Navigator maps (which can be installed to your PC for free when you update the maps). The 2xx0 series lets you enter the city first. The 2xx5 series does too really, you just use the Search Near box. I would recommend the 2595LMT if that is okay; otherwise the 2460LMT. And please, only post your question once.

Lookng for a Garmin unit, with bluetooth, with the issue of poor sound qualutiy and low volume addressed. Is there such a unit?

I note at the bottom of this comparison chart, it acknowloedges that “Generally speaking, the sound quality has gotten much better on recent models, but check the reviews (the first column links to these) as it does vary.”

But even the more recent, eg the 3790 review, says “The sound quality for the person on the other end of the line was disappointing though – fuzzy, tunnel-like and distant, and not as good as I would have expected on this unit. It is definitely inferior to my 765T, which has two microphone holes in the housing, probably for noise cancellation. ”

I have two older Gamins, one without Bluetooth, and one with (and with the issue). Looking for another Garmin now and every reveiw I read is dissapointing in this area. Is Garmin ever planning to fix this issue. Love the interface, but am starting too reluctantly look at the competitors.

    • I haven’t noticed a lot of issues with volume, but I know that others have. I can address Bluetooth though. I found the 2495LMT and 2495LMT to be much better than the 3790.

In your opinion which is the best Garmin on the market today? Of the following which is the best sat nav for using in Europe?:
    – 3490LMT
    – 3590LMT
    – 3790LMT
    – 1695LMU
Is there any other sat nav that I should consider? Thanks in advance for any advice 🙂

  6. I’m in the USA, planning to go to Europe. Which gps do you recommend? Thanks, John

  7. Hector N says:

Looking for a Garmin Nuvi with maps for US, Canada & Europe, with lifetime maps. What would you recommend? Thanks.

    • None of the units have lifetime maps for North America AND Europe. The most current transatlantic model is the 2475LT which has lifetime maps for nether. Or you could get an LMT model and add City Navigator Europe to it.

  8. Rich
I have been looking at your post of the nuvi comparison and the one on dissecting the nuvi series.
No where, can I find, detailed specs for them. Most interested in the amount of installed (not sd card) memory
that each comes with from the factory and of that how much is free. Can you help.

    thanks. Alice M.

Not sure what I tried to post was really a post.
    I have a Nuvi 1490LMT.
Can anyone tell me information as to the internal factory memory.
What is used by the device and what is free, and available for future map upgrades and/or other uses for
Garmin Nuvi devices that are still being offered.

Rich, I have been a user and admirer of your HUGE Garmin NUVI Comparison Chart for some time (years). The improvements and additions have been great. I recently discovered that the entire chart (headers included) can be copied to EXCEL by highlighting on the web page, and Ctrl C, then Ctrl V on an EXCEL worksheet. The headers can then be frozen so you can see the headers as you scroll down thru the various models. Also, various models and features (columns) can be highlighted to simplify the selection process. For example, I want a 5″ screen (easy to do with your new Column Header selector), LMT (highlight those manually in EXCEL), then see which models have a powered mount (2460LMT and 3590LMT). How easy is that!! Also, the links to the individual REVIEWS and to AMAZON work in the EXCEL format. With SO MUCH information on your chart, this EXCEL conversion makes it so easy to evaluate all the features and select the models with the features you want.

THANK YOU for all the hard work making and maintaining this web site. Much more helpful that anything else on the web, including GARMIN!!

    • Wow, that is so cool! I never would have thought of that. Glad you are finding it useful!

      • Mediaman says:

Rich – The comparison chart is indeed extremely useful (and the excel point above is really great!) . Two suggestions:
        1) Can you add a column for release date? In that way, it’s easiier to spot the newer models. Eg JAN 2012.
        2) Can you add an EXCEL export button to export the current models?? !!!

        • WL Whatley says:

          Mediaman,

          Go to: http://min.us/mE2jxOPag

Please let me know if this link works for you – THIS IS A TEST!! You can download this EXCEL from the site, I think.

          WL Whatley

          • Mediaman says:

Yes, that excel fine works fine. ; just like the one I created from a cut’n paste.

As noted above, this type of export function should be a standard feature for the chart ( ie add a button on the top to generate the current chart in excel format)

        • 1. Yes, I think I can do that. Width becomes the issue but as features get standardized on newer models (like text-to-speech), there are columns I can drop. I won’t promise that it will happen right away, but it is going on the to-do list.
          2. Possibly. Let me give that some consideration.

          • Mediaman says:

It terms of screen width challenges, some ideas:

            – slightly smaller font
            – change header row to vertical
            – go landscape
            – change the amazon link to a $ icon and move it to untitled column beside the first column

  12. Hello,
I just bought my first car and want a long-lasting GPS with life-time map updates at a fair price (under $220). It would be nice to include real time traffic. Please give me a model name sold in Canada.
I also want to know if the “lane assistant” really helpful for a new driver?

    Thank you!

  13. WL Whatley says:

    Rich,

It may be time to add another column to the Comparison Chart, for Screen Type.

I have always been annoyed with the old, balky, error prone, and slow touch screens that Garmin has used. Based on your description of the new capacitive glass display, I bought a Nuvi 3590LMT yesterday. This new screen is a GAME CHANGER. It is everything you describe in your review under “Form Factor and Display”. You may have been somewhat understated in your eval of this new screen. It is gorgeous, and it WORKS BEAUTIFULLY, too!!

What about a column with “Notes” to mention some different attributes like CGD or Waterproof??

In addition, the satellite reception is amazing. Last night I opened the box and turned it on for the first time while sitting in my den, 10 ft from the nearest window (that looks out into a backyard thick with pine trees). Every other unit I’ve had (2350LMT, 1350, 765T, and others) at least required leaving it in a window for a while with a much better exposure to the sky. As I began scrolling thru the screens, it beeped and said “Ready to Navigate”. I didn’t believe it at first, but it had an initial lock and location on me in my favorite chair.

Tell Garmin to send you a commission on my purchase. None of their info was of any influence in my decision to purchase. Don’t even know where their info is. Never see any ads.

THANK YOU for all the hard work here.

    WL Whatley

    • Screen width limitations are the big issue. I might be able to work it into screen size column though. I will definitely give it some thought.

Glad you found the site helpful!

  15. I am looking at either the 2460 LMT or 2595 LMT. Which one would you recommend? I understand 2460 has power mount but which one has better features and ease of use? Also do any nuvi run through back up camera screen in vehcles, just like how I hook up my iphone?

  16. @Mediaman – “change header row to vertical” – I’ve thought about this before, but will investigate it again. Thanks for the nudge!

  17. Garmin Nuvi GPS unite, are not normally considered for Motorcycle use, as most Nuvi models are not waterproof. or rugged enough to withstand bumps, shocks and possibly vibrations from the engine.

However I have been using a ‘Refurbished’ Garmin Nuvi 255, that I bought from Amazon.com for $55 with Free Shipping to USA Address over a year ago. Even with Shipping from that Address to the Philippines and paying about 11% Customs/VAT, it still worked out cheaper than a Chinese GPS from CDR King. I bought an ‘ARKON GPS032 Handlebar mount Case’ for $16.24 also.

Such handlebar mount case provides the Nuvi with protection from the rain, dust, dirt, and isolation from vibration and shocks, as well as some insulation from the heat of the sun. However it does not stop ‘glare’ on the screen when the sun is overhead or behind you (and you can’t block it with your head).

I solved this to some extent, by fitting a detachable ‘Visor’ to the Case. I also mounted a 2000mAh Lithium cell pack with a 100ma Solar Panel Charger built in. This is for power back up on long rides, or powering other devices like my WBT-201 Bluetooth GPS Logger (that I modified the settings on, so it Tracks 4Hz, on Change of Heading +/- 2 Degrees). Can also power/recharge my Mobile Phone, and has a Torch built in.

Such handlebar mount case, is not the only solution.

I have considered a RAM Mount with one of their many motorcycle mount options (I favour the replacement handlebar mount bolts, that adds the 1″ RAM Mount Ball above it). If one uses a plastic heat sealer on suitable clear plastic ‘pocket’, custom made that the Nuvi is a tight, slide in fit, the plastic should be nice and taut over the screen (yet have enough give, for touch screen operation. Folding this plastic ‘wallet’ over at the top so a flap hangs down the back., allows one to reach the power slide switch, yet keeps the rain out when clipped into the RAM mount cradle.

One can also fit a plastic box between the back of the RAM Mount Cradle and the screw attached diamond mount with 1″ RAM rubber coated ball (with 2 holes drilled in the correct position in the bottom of the plastic box). gasket sealant or silicone rubber, will keep the water from entering the box via these holes.
I would then consider adding a Visor, and side ‘wings’, via some type of hinge (duct tape, or continuous plastic Hinge?). Consider adding a thin layer of styro-foam, to help keep the heat of the sun, off the Nuvi, also.

  18. Short of buying a Zumo for my motorcycle trips, any suggestions on a Nuvi that I would be able to download my routes from a map source.
    I have a Nuvi 255w now .
    Thanks

  19. Larry Dunaway says:

I have a Nuvi 350. I want to upgrade to a newer model, prehaps a 2595LMT. Is there a way to ‘move’ my ‘favorites’ from the 350 to the newer model
without having to manually enter them individually?
    Thank you for your response.

    • You can try this. Connect your Nuvi 350 to your computer. Set your folder options to display hidden folders, then using windows explorer, click on your device. Then in the search box in that window, Search for .System. Find the file [local_poi] and save it.That is the file you need. Then using your new device, do the same thing. Copy the saved [local_poi] into your device. Make sure you over-write the one that is there. Safely remove your device, and your there. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A FULL BACKUP OF BOTH DEVICE, FIRST. THEN IF BY CHANCE, SOMETHING GOES WRONG YOUR CAN UNDO THE CHANGE.

    • SORRY, I gave you the wrong info. Follow what I said before for the most part, but use this:
      FAVORITES
      ****************
Backup your favorites – connect the nuvi to your compute and save the GPX/current.gpx file; you can also use this file to transfer favorites to a new unit.
The [current.gpx file is the one to use.

  20. Excellent site but, I’ll be honest. I’m still very confused as to the world of GPS equipment, updating maps, preloaded versus non-preloaded, and so on. Can you help with the following therefore?

I live in the USA but will soon be heading to Spain. Using Google Maps on my phone is a non-starter thanks to AT&T’s ridiculous data plan charges so I’m looking at buying a dedicated GPS for my rental car. This being the case and as I’m rather cheap!……

    1. What US-based models are available which will work in Spain?
    2. Are there any models with pre-loaded Spanish maps?
    3. If I buy a model with a pre-loaded map, why should I bother buying a map update?

Thanks in advance for your help and for an excellent site.

  21. I am purchasing a program from Microsoft called Mappoint. It lists the ability to send info to GPS’s with the following:
MapPoint can import data and export data to a navigation device (satnav, personal navigation device, or PND) using GPX (‘GPS eXchange Format‘) files. Do this by selecting Import GPX file… or Export to GPX file… on the Data menu. Both menu items will display a standard Windows file selection dialog box, so that you can select the GPX file to use.

If your navigation device is a Garmin product or if it has MSN Direct enabled, it is also possible to transfer a location or route directly. Plug your device into your PC. If it is recognized properly, Send to GPS device should be enabled on the Tools menu. Select this to send the currently selected route or location. Alternatively, select Send route to GPS device… on the popup menu that appears after right clicking on a route.

If your device has MSN Direct enabled, you can transfer this information wirelessly by selecting Send to mobie phone on either the Tools menu or the popup-up menu that appears when you right click on a route.

I am wondering if I can dowload about a hundred locations into the gps from my computer and is this accomplished via the usb port?

Also, once the locations are in there, can I select an area and see every one which is nearby and then set a route to visit them? These 100 would be throughout 2 states, so they aren’t really close by each other though some may be.

    Thanks in advance

    • Yes, you can transfer locations from your computer, but it would probably be easier using Garmin software (which is free, although you need maps, but you can get those for no extra cost with an LM or LMT model).

MSN Direct has been discontinued BTW.

“Also, once the locations are in there, can I select an area and see every one which is nearby and then set a route to visit them? These 100 would be throughout 2 states, so they aren’t really close by each other though some may be.” Yes but it will be more text based (list of Favorites) than map-based.

      • If I use the garmin software I would have to type in each one rather than transfer the bunch of them?

Could these also be transferred to a TOMTOM GO model thru the mappoint software?

Would that text based list of favorites show them by distance?

        Thanks for your help!

  22. I’m looking for a Garmin where I can upload planned trips from Google/Mapquest and/or other ride planning sites. My routes are pretty specific as I’m not necessarily looking for the shortest route but want to go on specific roads on motorcycle trips. The Zumo is way to expensive so I’m not interested in that. Thank you in advance for your help.

    Mary

  23. @KhEmpire – Apparently they don’t do this on their Swiss site, but if you’ll go to this page and select another European country in the drop down box, you should be able to use their comparison tools.

  24. I loved the narrator accents on my original Garmin (streetpilot 550). Is it possible to download any of those accents to my 1490 LMT?

  25. J McCulley says:

I have seen the pedestrian link and have a question about maps for Italy. We will be walking in Rome, driving in Tuscany and to Venice, and walking in Venice. Will I need to purchase separate maps or is there one map that will cover these areas? Do any of the models listed on the pedestrian link include Italy maps?

    Thanks!

  26. I am looking for my first GPS and it has been overwhelming trying to compare all the options. Thanks for your work in putting this site together! I am looking at the 2360 model and according to amazon’s chart the LT version has 3D terrain but the LMT version does not. I do want the Lifetime maps. What exactly is 3D terrain view? Is it a gimmick or should I look at a different model that has it along with Lifetime Map?

    Thank you for your time!

    • The lifetime maps is a BIG plus..especially after coming from a GPS that I had to purchase maps. The 3D terrain is eye candy but it does look nice to say the least. The “T” part…make sure you have FM service in your area or the area you are traveling in so you don’t become disgruntled when you do or don’t have service. I travel in a state were only a few cities in the extreme northly part have it and that is because the City of Memphis borders it. I have used it successfully but again its only available in a few areas for me.

    • They both offer 3D view, but neither has 3D terrain like this. The only difference between the 2360LT and 2360LMT is that the latter adds lifetime map updates.

  27. I’m new to this whole thing and don’t want anything complicated since this is my first GPS purchase. I can get lost going around the corner, so I definitely want a model that speaks street names, but do any also speak lane assist or is this just a map feature?

    • No, it’s just a visual map feature, but it can be very helpful.

    • WL Whatley says:

Egersh – I have a suggestion for a “GPS newbie” like you : go to Craigslist – Electronics ; and buy a Garmin Nuvi 205W, or whatever is cheap, maybe a Nuvi 265W, the model number is not so important and the maps are not either. Streets just do not change that fast. Do not spend over $50 – I see lots of 260W and 265W for $40 around here. Yes, they are “out of date” and obsolete, but they still work just fine – AND- anything is better than what you have now!!

You will get a good feeling for what you like (and don’t like) about GPS, you won’t have wasted a bunch of money (it will be a back-up unit or transferred to a kid’s car) and you can move up knowing much more that you do now, and can make a better, more intelligent purchase later for more money.

Stick with Garmin – they are not perfect, have plenty of “issues”, but are an industry leader. What you learn on this one will translate easily to the next.

      Good Luck!!

  28. Harry Poland says:

I have a NUVi Garmin #760 that, when purchased, did not have lifetime updates. In comparing the GARMIN 760 with all others on your website it is apparent that all capabilities are present except for voice command and MSN Direct which has been discontinued. I recently purchased the “lifetime” traffic update and attempted to download this data to my GARMIN using both XPPro3 and Win 7. I found it almost impossible to download. This even with the GARMIN (2) representatives on the telephone giving direct assistance. At one point I even considered returning this lifetime traffic update to Best Buy. But after three to four days of attempting the download It was apparently downloaded to my GARMIN (I hope).

But just how do I verify that my Garmin was, in fact, updated. At the end of the supposed download there was no notification given to verify the download was actually updated on my GARMIN. The GARMIN representive told me that I would have to drive on a newly opened road and verify if the Garmin recognized the highway! WOW…What an answer! Anyway is there a way to access my GARMIN directly in order to verify if the latest “traffic ” maps have been downloaded?

    Thanks for your input,
    Harry

    • It sounds like you are confusing lifetime map updates and lifetime traffic. They are two different things. To verify which map version you have, go to Tools > Settings > Map > Map Info.

    • I have owned several NUVI models that I only used for traffic, and they all malfunctioned. I sent two of them back and had to wait for replacements. I think the NUVI models are the least engineered, most bug-ridden models, at least that’s my experience. How frustrating (and unreliable). The after malfunction support was really good however, but that’s not the reason we buy navigation.

  29. The local Costco store is offering the Nuvi 2595LMT for a purchase price of $229.99 (plus sales tax), same as the MSRP on the Garmin website, but the identification number (version number) on the blister pack is 010-01002-06 and the package mentions that Garmin Digital Traffic – GTM 60 HD is included. The Garmin website for the 2595 lists several version numbers including 010-01002-06 and identifies that one as nuvi 2595LMTHD. It seems like the Costco blister pack is including what would otherwise be the extra cost accessory GTM 60™ HD Digital Traffic Receiver (MSRP $69.99 if purchsed separately on the Garmin website). Does this seem like a good deal? If it is, Costco is missing the chance to advertise clearly this extra value in their bundle.

      Hello:
I just checked the chart above and as I recall the model #2595 had a 4.3″ display. If this is in fact true the price seems excessive, at least to me. And do you even need 3D display unless you absolutely must have it at any cost. If in fact this model does have a 4.3″ screen Costco just recently advertised a Garmin #50 for $119; Much more reasonable. The model #50 did have a 4.3″ screen but I also think that it did have lifetime maps update. The 5.0′ screen does make for a much improved navigation and this model had the trafic lane indicator which would be a great buy in my opinion. One other note: Do not take Costco’s price to be the very best as I just recently was in the market for tires and Sam’s beat Costco’s price by 8%.. Sam’s installed the tires immediately with a minimum of waiting. But Costco told me that I had to arrange for an appointment which would have been the next day!. I just went directly accross the street and that is when I discovered that Sam’s had the better price. Guess where I will buy my next set of tires?

      • Harry Poland says:

Sorry but the #2595 does have a 5.0′ display but the price still seems excessive. maybe it is the options available.

        • The 2595LMT is a high-end model that allows you to use voice commands, has Bluetooth, etc. The 50LM doesn’t include a traffic receiver.

Re: tires (and this could have changed since I moved out of Costco territory…Costco would prorate the warranty anytime I thought they were getting treadworn. I often got four new high-end tires for $100! Sams requires that they be nearly bald.

      • Harry — I completely agree about Costco’s prices, and especially their tire prices. For tires Costco offers very limited selection and doesn’t even beat local independents for the same tire. I also agree the nuvi 50LM (especially with US and Canada maps) for $120 is very attractive. I’m just toying with being interested in controlling the GPS with my voice, and having the ad-free and possibly quicker traffic updates made possible by the GTM 60™ HD Digital Traffic Receiver. Buying the Costco bundled version of the 2595LMT with HD traffic appears to be nearly the cheapest way to acquire that feature.
I notice Rich Owings has not had good performance from the HD traffic feature, probably because the broadcast coverage for that service is not as complete and/or signal strength not as good as the standard level traffic service, so I am hesitating to dive in to that feature. I wonder what Rich Owings would recommend about the Costco bundle?

    • It’s a good deal. I think the HD traffic service has improved since the GTM 60 was first released, but I haven’t tested it lately.

  30. What do you mean by Voice commands – A killer feature and it actually works pretty well on most models

Can you manually put in addres and can you give it voice command for the address?

  31. 50LM or 1450LMT? Is it worth it to forgo one of those two to upgrade to 2555LMT (which is $60 more)? What do you get for that extra $60? Thanks!

    • The 1450LMT adds traffic and multi-destination routing. The 2555LMT has lots of new customization options, Exit Services and Garmin’s historic road speed database. If you can afford it, I would definitely go for the 2555LMT.

  32. andy bennett says:

is it possible to play mp3 music on the 1390lmt?

  33. I just bought a MINI Cooper and want to buy a GPS. It has been created to cooperate with an iPHONE. I have iffy phone service and think that buying a GPS may be a more reliable option than an iPHONE. When the GPS has bluetooth, does that mean I can use it to talk through my auto-system as my (non iPHONE but reg phone with bluetooth) phone does?

  34. Norman Pitts says:

I am looking at purchasing sevaral garmin nuvi 2595LMT / 2555LMT for my delivery drivers. Multi-Waypiont routing is a must. I would also like to use Microsoft Streets & Trips 2013 by entering the route addresses daily, optimize route, and get directions. Then export the gpx file into the garmin device.

Does anyone know if either of those devices will get the job done?

    • Both have multi-point routing. You would have to optimize the route on the nuvi though. It has it’s own routing algorithm and, while it could use addresses transferred from S&T, it will calculate its own routes. Another choice for desktop planning would be Garmin BaseCamp.

  35. Hi, what is a better deal: 2460LMT or 3790LMT ?
    Both refurbished for arounf $180,00

    2460 over 3790 : screen size

3790 over 2460: screen resolution, 3D maps, sleek design.

  36. Steven Havens says:

I am getting ready to buy another Garmin GPS (I have two now) because I like the features that the 2555LMT & 2595LMT bring to the picinic.
My question is: Why would I “not” buy one of the manufacture refurbished units that are available at multiple suppliers?
What is the down side? Why are there so many “refurb” units out there?

  37. trying to choose between 2460lmt and 2595lmt. Currently have nuvi 680 which works fine, just needs map update. Worth upgrading? which model would you suggest? Thanks.

    • Oh yes. An upgrade to one of those models will get you lane assist, speed limit display, trip logging, multi-destination routing and voice command.

I prefer the 2595LMT for exit services and several new customization options, although I have heard complaints about low Bluetooth call volume on this model. If that is important to you, you my want to go with the 2460LMT.

  38. Jim Davis says:

I have a nuvi 755T but have the opportunity to upgrade? to a nuvi 1300LMT.
Just wondering if I should upgrade or just buy the lifetime map update seperatly?

  39. Hi All, I am looking for a GPS have about 30 Multi destination point, and It also allows me add some more point during my trip, then re-calculating my trip without the points I Came… Thnks

  40. Thank you so much Rich for this excellent page of comparison information! A WORD OF CAUTION to Craigs List buyers. I have been buying and selling on CL for a long time and have never had any problems….until yesterday. I’d been putting off my Garmin purchase because there was so much information to weed through/research (your chart will help with that, thanks again!). Someone advertised on CL a Garmin 260W in excellent condition (in box) for $50. I did some quick research, found it did what I wanted and I purchased it. When I picked it up, I verified the box said 260W and that everything advertised was inside the box – good so far! Last night I could not find a setting to get it to speak street names when finally I looked on the bottom of the unit and it was a model 250 instead of a 260. Soooooo….. the word of caution is to look a little further when inspecting a CL purchase and verify the model. I’m waiting on a return email, I’ve asked for a refund.

    • harry poland says:

Yes I am somewhat suspicious of Craigs list: I don’t know exactly why but do not now go to their website. I consider CR in the same view as Ebay. I have been burned quite a few times on Ebay and to try and get a resolution Was absolutely impossible. I cancelled my account out with Ebay and Pay Pal several years ago. And I have had no regrets. And surprisingly, I have received a fraudulant product (Blu RayDisc) from a purchase made recently on Amazon. Has anyone ever tried to contact Amazon? LOL! If I cannot contact any merchant to report a problem then should i really do business with this company? And the real secret is just how satisfactory is Amazon’s effort in getting a satisfactory resolution? I don’t know the answer at this time but I do know that their advertised telephone number has been closed out and I can find no other number to contact them on. This is certainly is not dealing at arms length. But Amazon is just hoping that the complaining customer will just dry up and blow away……………….

  41. This chart is super-helpful. Very concise and informative. I was wondering if you have something similar (or are planning to have) regarding Garmin cradles. I’ve bought some lots of cradles on ebay and would like to identify them, but even though some look similar, they are slightly different dimensions. If you had a table like this to ID cradles, that would be great.

  42. I am looking for a dashboard mounted GPS that shows the latitude and longitude of your location. Is this present on any of these models?

  43. Harold Wieland. says:

Currently have a tomtom, but looking to upgrade. Interested in a Garmin, but would like to know what “Traffic” is. Great comparison by the way.
    Thanks,
    Harold

    • It uses a traffic receiver (integrated into the power cord) to show reported traffic incidents and delays, and can use that info for rerouting. But accuracy is FAR from 100%.

  44. I’m not sure how this will help, all of these comments are about the Garmin Nuvi, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to start a new thread? Anyway, I’m completely lost about what to buy because I don’t know how these devices work yet. What I need is a basic gps unit for mountain biking, so I don’t get lost. I can’t afford the $500 Edge 800, and I can’t tell from the Edge 200 description, if that does what I need. It says it tracks “location”, but don’t we have to download a map or something, for it to tell us where we are on the map? Can anyone direct me to an online source that explains the basics of how to track where I am, so I can make adjustments enroute and go the right way? A lot of endurance races say “our trails are not marked that well so you might end up going off route, so make sure to map your ride” or something to that effect. But I want to ride in Anza Borrego, and get a GPS, so I don’t get lost. Where to start? I’m female, and usually end up mountain biking alone, because I can’t keep up with the men, and there aren’t a lot of women my age doing what I do, which are long, training rides over considerable distance.

    • Wow, I love Anza Borrego! My wife and I mountain biked to a side canyon there (Sheep Canyon?). That sand was a pain on the way up!

The mountain bike half of my GPS for cyclists page is a good place to start, and I mostly stick by my recommendation of the three units there. The Garmin GPSMAP 62s is ideal, while the eTrex 20 is the budget route. I need to change the DeLorme recommendation, which would now be for the PN60w + inReach, since the SPOT Satellite Communicator has been discontinued. Regardless, the PN-60w + inReach, while more complex, would allow you to summon help if necessary. I would avoid the Edge series as they are beter suited for training and getting stats than for backcountry navigation., If you read my reviews you’ll figure this out, but there are plenty of free topo maps for the Garmin units at http://gpsfiledepot.com. If you can wait till Black Friday, there will be some good deals out there, and I’ll cover the on this site.

Also read our handheld GPS FAQs, especially the handheld 101 series, for info about tracking, etc… http://gpstracklog.com/handheld-gps-faqs

Hope this helps. And have fun riding Anza Borrego!

  45. I am looking for the best Garmin that would come with maps in Europe as well as the US. We are traveling to the UK next month and renting a car. The 2475LT advertises that it comes with maps to Europe included. Do you have an opinion as to whether this is a good unit to purchase and take with us? We have no experience with GPS units but it seems that Garmin makes a good product. Thank you for your ideas and your help.

  46. hi, i need iran and tehran city map software for gps 1350 model.pls help me .pls send to my email .TQ

  47. Daune Pizzicara says:

After being told that an internal GPS can’t be installed in my husband’s 2010 Dodge Ram, I am looking for a GPS. I am overwhelmed with the multiple models available from each manufacturer. Costco is running a special TomTom VIA 1605TM for $129.99. I understand that you prefer Garmin, but is this something I should consider? If not, I would appreciate any suggestions because I’m clueless. He doesn’t need the top of the line, but would like to get something midlevel.

    • I wasn’t particularly impressed with the 1605TM… http://gpstracklog.com/2012/09/tomtom-via-1605tm-review.html

If you want a large screen, you might want to look at the nuvi 50LM or the 2555LMT.

      • Daune Pizzicara says:

I’m not sure what the comparison is of the nuvi 50LM and the 2555LMT. If the truck has a 12V power outlet, do I need a powered mount? Also if the truck & phone has bluetooth, do I need a GPS with bluetooth? Do you have a preference between the nuvi friction mount or portable friction mount? I apologize Rich for all the questions – told you I was clueless 🙂

        • The only difference between a powered mount and one that isn’t is that on the former the power lead plugs into the mount; with the latter it plugs into the unit. All nuvis come with a power cord. You do not need a powered mount. They are nice in that you can leave the power connected to the mount; otherwise there is an extra step each time of plugging it into the unit.

Bluetooth would just allow hands free calls, so if you can already do that, no you don’t need it. Although I’m not sure which would have the better interface for calls – your truck or the nuvi.

          I prefer this mount… http://gpstracklog.com/2011/09/garmin-portable-friction-mount-review.html

          Hope that helps.

          • Daune Pizzicara says:

What are the differences between the 50LM and the 2555LMT? I saw what I thought is a good price for the 50LM of $99.

  48. I just purchased a TomTom reconditioned 1535 with bluetooth, lifetime maps & traffic, voice & 3D maps… it works great except for one thing. I tried to find and business by name using voice command, I found that the only way to locate with voice command is by address, city, state…. which means I have to pull over and search the business on my phone to get the address; this seems rather odd that I can’t use voice to locate businesses, etc when I can locate businesses by typing in the name.
I this possible with any mobile gps systems (preferably Garmin or TomTom) to do a locate/directions by name with voice command instead of address? (for instance “take me to Joe’s grocery in West Palm Beach, Florida).
    Thanks in advance
    Bill

    • With Garmin nuvis that have voice command, you can say Voice Command > Find Place > Joe’s Grocery and it will list all Joe’s groceries by distance. After saying Find Place you have the option to say Along Route or Near Destination. Works great!

  49. Harold Wieland says:

I purchased one of those anti slip mats that are triangular in shape and moderatly heavy from Wal-Mart for my GPS and it works absolutely great. No more cords hanging down from the windshield and the mat doesn’t move in the slightest. With the GPS now at eye level, I no longer have to look up to see the GPS and not to worry about obstructing my view while driving. Highly recommeded.

  50. Joy Spears says:

I have used my Garmin Nuvi 200 very little. Not sure what year I got it When I move the on button it will start loading the maps and will click off. I do not have the sales receipt as it was a gift. When loading it says 2008 and I updated the maps within the last years.
