Live traffic – for free!

Googlemapslogo
Google announced today that they are adding live traffic to Google Maps. Now you can’t use this on your PND, but it is available on some GPS cell phones via Google Mobile.

This has me wondering about Google’s economic model (give stuff away, make a killing on ads) and the coming cell phone GPS vs. PND wars. Using your cell phone as a GPS is nothing like the experience of a dedicated, decent sized touch-screen device and, while cell phones may take some market share (those folks with only rare or occasional navigation needs), I’ve thought that there is still plenty of room for growth in the PND market.

But Garmin and others better take a close look at this. I wonder how long it will be before a GPS manufacturer comes out with a dual model — pay for traffic services, or get them for free in exchange for seeing location based ads.

Free traffic and satellite photos is a pretty good deal. And while I haven’t found out what traffic service provider Google is using, their coverage appears to be good too. I routinely drive through Santa Rosa, CA, and live traffic reports have yet to show up on my nuvi 660, but here it is on Google Maps.

GPS, daylight savings time and Mini-Y2K

Have you heard about the fears of a mini-Y2K event when the U.S. goes to daylight savings time (DST) earlier than in past years? The law making this change wasn’t passed until 2005, which means that software created before then could miss the date for advancing the time (making you late for appointments from March 11 to April 1).

Magellan Maestro series includes voice recognition

Magellanmaestro UPDATE: Check out our Magellan Maestro 4000, Magellan Maestro 4040 and Magellan Maestro 4050 reviews.

GPSReview.net reported last night that a new Magellan GPS series, the Magellan Maestro, is about to hit the market. There’s nothing on Magellan’s website yet, but I did find out that TigerGPS.com already has the Maestro series on their site. They are showing an availability date of early April 2007 for two of the units, and mid-May for the top of the line model..

This is the first thin series (0.8") that’s been put out by Magellan. The Maestro units will include a new user interface and improved graphics. What’s really exciting though, is that the top of the line model, the Magellan Maestro 4050, will include voice recognition capabilities (something that showed up on my 2007 GPS wish list). Let’s take a look at the differences in the three units:

Garmin StreetPilot c580 review

Garminc580weather

UPDATE: Most of the several generations old StreetPilot series, including this model, has been discontinued. For a more current recommendation, check out our Auto GPS buyers guide or go straight to our Garmin nuvi comparison chart.

The Garmin StreetPilot c580 is the new flagship model in the StreetPilot line. It is nearly identical to the c550, except that it adds MSN Direct services (see coverage area), which it receives via FM radio signal. MSN Direct offers weather, movie times, gas prices and live traffic. This also means that the source of traffic data is different than that of the c550, which receives TMC data. The first year is free; after that, MSN Direct service is $49.95 per year or $129.95 for the lifetime of the device.

Garmin nuvi 670 review

Garmin_nuvi_670_2

UPDATE: Though still available and supported, Garmin has discontinued the nuvi 670. For newer models, check out my Garmin nuvi comparison chart.

UPDATE 3: The latest trans-Atlantic navigators to be introduced are the Garmin nuvi 2475LT and nuvi 2370LT.

The Garmin nuvi 670 is identical to the nuvi 660 with one exception — in addition to North America, the nuvi 670 adds pre-loaded maps of Europe (see coverage map below).
