Pedestrian-friendly Garmin nuvi 1200 and 1300 series

Garmin has announced eight (!) new nuvi models that come with urban pedestrian navigation enhancements. Significantly thinner than previous models, “the nüvi 1200 and 1300 series are the first nüvi devices to offer pedestrian navigation capability enabled through optional CityXplorer™ maps. CityXplorer maps are available for select tourist destinations in
both North America and Europe, and can easily be downloaded directly to the nüvi.”

New Navigon introductions feature MyRoutes

Navigon is announcing three new models today — the 3300 max, 4300T and 7300T. The big news is the MyRoutes feature, which provides up to three route choices with distance and ETA calculated for all entered destinations, factoring in speed limits, construction and traffic. As you can see above, route options are displayed on a map with ETA and driving time.

Insignia NS-CNV10 review

The Insignia NS-CNV10 is a connected GPS navigator available exclusively from BestBuy. It includes a one year subscription for connectivity which gives you access to Google Local search, live traffic, and gas prices. The CNV10 is a 3.5” model with text-to-speech, so you’ll hear “in one mile, make a left turn on Main Street,” rather than just “in one mile, make a left turn.”

Garmin news and image gallery from CES

Garmin is pretty tight-lipped about future plans and, as expected, I wasn't able to pry a lot out of them at CES. I did find out that the new third-generation MSN Direct services will be available on nuvi 2×5, 7×5 and 8×5 models (when equipped with an MSN receiver, of course). And it does sound like the nuvifone rollout will be at the GSMA Mobile World Congress next month.

Garmin ecoRoute

UPDATE: TWICE is reporting that ecoRoute works with 2xx and 7xx series nuvis.

Another Garmin announcement today is ecoRoute, a software update for some nuvi units that adds a "less fuel" route option. Additionally, ecoRoute includes a Fuel Report that tracks fuel usage over time, and a Mileage Report that monitors mileage and fuel usage on a per-trip basis.

Magellan Maestro 4350 review

The Magellan Maestro 4350 is one of several new models introduced by Magellan in 2008. This 4.3” wide screen navigator includes the updated “OneTouch” user interface, six million POIs, and text-to-speech. It also comes preloaded with maps of the entire U.S. and Canada, Bluetooth, live traffic and 3D buildings. Other features include AAA TourBook, an FM transmitter and QuickSpell auto-complete.

Cool! You got a new GPS for your car. Now what? Here are some handy tips to help you get more from it.

Register it – Do this right away and you might receive a free map update. This is especially important if you did not get the latest model, increasing the chances that it came with an out of date map set. Garmin gives you 60 days after first use, TomTom and Magellan 30. After that you have to pay for any map updates.

NAVIGON 2200T review

The Navigon 2200T is Navigon’s current entry-level model with lifetime traffic. This 3.5″ touch screen unit features text-to-speech, so you’ll hear “in one mile, turn right onto Maple Street” instead of just “in one mile, turn right.” Other features include Reality View^TM Pro, Lane Assist Pro, speed limit display, multi-destination trip planning and DirectHelp^SM. It includes maps of the 48 contiguous United States. PC Magazine has reported a fairly small number of POIs – 2 million, though I have not been able to verify that; Navigon documentation simply states that the device has “millions of POIs.”

The Garmin nüvi 775Tis one of Garmin’s newest trans-Atlantic navigator, and their top of the line one as well. Pre-loaded with maps of the U.S., Canada and Europe, the 775T also offers lane assist, lifetime traffic and 3-D buildings.
