Enhancing Geocaching.com with Greasemonkey & Tampermonkey Scripts

Back at the start of the year we saw some historic rainfall here in the United Kingdom.  Rivers burst their banks and huge swathes of the countryside were under several feet of water.  It made planning the weekly geocaching trip even more difficult – I didn’t want to do a twenty mile circular walk only to find the final mile back to the car blocked by floodwater.

It was in my frustration of consulting governmental flood maps and correlating them with geocaching maps that I discovered the wonderful world of the Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey script.

Greasemonkey and Tampermonkey are plugins (for Firefox and Google Chrome respectively) that allow you to install scripts to modify your favorite web pages.  It all sounds a bit complicated but in essence they allow you to do things such as get Google Search results to appear in two columns rather than just one, or show the buffer speed of the YouTube video you are watching. read more

Waze Updates Allows Geotagging, Parking Reminders

Google acquires Waze

Waze, the popular social mapping program, got an update last week that introduced a set of features called “Places.” This feature allows users to add POIs to their Waze app to mark fun and interesting places that they find while traveling. In addition to information about POIs, users can add photos to help others know they are in the right place. Sounds an awful lot like the popular waymarking pastime, except instead of a scavenger hunt to try and find places, you can actually get directions there. read more

Frozen Pipe Glitched Galileo Launch

Preliminary reports from the Galileo inquiry seem to be trickling through, and a possible cause for the mislaunch of the two Galileo satellites has been determined. According to Phys.org and the French daily Le Monde, investigators suspect that the source of the glitch is a frozen pipe which contained hydrazine fuel.

According to the phys.org article, the hydrazine pipes are located near another pipe that circulates ultra-cold liquid helium which may have led to their freeze. The hydrazine fuel is used by the Fregat upper stage to drive the satellites into their correct orbital slots. Experts have already confirmed that the upper stage was not completed properly during the launch, stranding the satellites in an unusable elliptical orbit. read more

Garmin Introduces Hunt View Maps

When you are hunting, there are a lot of things that you have to be aware of to ensure your hunt is legal and now, with Garmin‘s new Hunt View Maps, you’ll have one less thing to worry about. This series of preloaded microSD cards contain essential map data showing public vs private land so you don’t ever have to question where you are. The maps also contain satellite imagery, 24K TOPO mapping and routable roads. The maps are currently only available for Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Utah.

The maps are $80 each and are available for purchase on Garmin’s website now. Each map comes with information for the entire state and provides borders and boundaries for public and private land as well as rural roads for better navigation. The card also supports turn-by-turn navigation for rural roads to help hunters navigate in unfamiliar country. read more

TomTom Golfer Officially Announced

Well, it’s finally here. The TomTom Golfer, a GPS sports watch designed to help golfers measure their game and navigate the hazards of the green has been officially announced and is available for preorder in the UK. You might remember we talked a little bit about it a couple of weeks ago. Now, the watch has been officially announced and will be available soon for around $250. The TomTom Golfer comes preloaded with 34,000 popular golf courses around the globe. You can check golf course coverage here.

Other information that the watch can show includes precise yardage on the green, distance and previews of hazards on each hole, distances to lay-up points and score and distance tracking for your round. The watch is weather and waterproof, so if it starts drizzling, you haven’t got anything to fear. read more

TomTom Updates GPS Sport Watch Software

TomTom has announced a slew of updates for their GPS watches, including the long-awaited Android support for their popular MySports App, and added compatibility for iOS 8. Android users can download the MySports App from the Google Play Store for free. Support for iOS was released last year.

The app was first announced in February and allows users to track their stats and perform other functions. The app is currently compatible with the TomTom Runner and the TomTom Multi-Sport GPS Sport Watch. Phones that have been cleared for compatibility include the Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, S5, Nexus 5, HTC One and HTC One M8, with more devices coming soon. read more

Updated: Implantable GPS Chip for Pets

Update: So, I looked into this a bit further and found that this is likely a fraudulent crowdfunding attempt and thankfully never got off the ground. Karen Zackton is actually Karen Hanover, and was convicted of fraud and detained for an unrelated incident. She has stepped down as CEO of EscapeAlert and has insisted that the project was legitimate and simply ‘delayed.’ Regardless, the site has gone black and there hasn’t been any new news on it. 

Two of the most common uses of GPS tracking are to keep track of loved ones and to help find lost pets. But GPS pet collars are clunky, expensive and easily lost. Now, a company called Escape Alert is prepping to launch a Kickstarter next week to change that. Through crowdfunding, Escape Alert wants to create an implantable GPS chip to track your furry loved one wherever they may roam. read more
