Garmin nuvi, dezl and zumo owners got a holiday gift – the brand new Garmin Express update software showed up on Garmin’s website on or about Christmas Eve. Touted as a “one-stop shop for keeping your nüvi, zūmo or dēzl up-to-date,” Garmin Express is capable of updating software and maps; backing up, restoring and transferring favorites; and installing free vehicles and voices. Newer technologies such as smartphone apps have put less emphasis on logs. As a result, many a new geocacher has fallen foul of just putting a dot or a ‘TFTC’ (Thanks For The Cache) for entirety of their log, only to be reminded politely (or in some cases not so politely) by the geocache owner that more detailed logs are ‘encouraged’. read more

How to update Garmin firmware using WebUpdater
UPDATE: Here’s a new way for owners of auto units.
Garmin rolls out lots of firmware/software updates (terms that I will use interchangeably here) for their GPS receivers. Sometimes it’s bug fixes, sometimes you get new features (though the latter is more likely with handheld units than auto). But for many owners, it’s a mysterious process or an option they aren’t even aware of.
