Magellan has quietly rolled out a new entry level handheld, the eXplorist 110. The 110 appears very similar to the eXplorist 310 we reviewed last year, except that the new model doesn’t allow you to load additional maps and has no expandable memory. Still, with that great preloaded world map found on the new Magellan handhelds, that’s not a huge drawback.

Garmin has announced their lightest handheld golf GPS yet, the Approach G6, coming in at just over three ounces. The G6 has an internal rechargeable battery and comes pre-loaded with over 25,000 worldwide courses.

That’s why TomTom, Motorola and today Magellan, have jumped in with both feet, smack into a market dominated by Garmin, which has a huge lead. As we surmised way back in October, Magellan is introducing their own sportswatch – actually two of them – the Magellan Switch and Switch Up.

Before I got into GPS I used cyclometers to tell me how far I had gone on my mountain bike, which was very helpful when a trail description said something like “watch for hidden trail on left after 3.2 miles!” They worked surprisingly well, although dealing with wires, strapping a magnet to the spokes and calibrating the whole setup was way too complex. Fortunately there’s a new kid in town, bringing GPS accuracy and new features without the need for wires, magnets or calibration. It’s the Garmin Edge 200
New data fields coming to Garmin handhelds?

A recent beta firmware update for the Garmin Montana series brought twenty new data field options to the device, as well as data field categories. You can see four of the new data fields in the screenshot above. The Vertical Distance to Destination is sure to be a hit for the peak baggers among us. Hopefully these will make it to other models as well.

The DeLorme inReach is now shipping. For those of you who don’t recall, this is one of the first consumer satellite communicators with two-way messaging capabilities, so search and rescue can tell you that they’re on their way to bail your ass out. It requires another device to pair with (to compose messages), which is why it comes in two flavors – one that pairs with Android smartphones and another for the DeLorme PN-60w.
