Garmin has rolled out a new 24K topo map collection, the Trailhead Series, starting with two titles — the Appalachian Trail (AT) and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)
. No word yet on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), which isn’t as well mapped, so its arrival may not be imminent.
Garmin Trailhead series–AT & PCT
Garmin Approach S1
The Garmin Approach S1 is a sportswatch style GPS for golf, giving you basic stats such as precise yardages to the front, back and middle of greens. It comes with over 15,000 preloaded courses for the US and Canada.
Garmin Forerunner 410
UPDATE: Check out the Forerunner 610, whose touchscreen interface eliminates the touch bezel problems found on the 400 series.
UPDATE 2: This model has been discontinued. For a list of current models, see our GPS for runners page.
The Garmin Forerunner 410 is a GPS sportswatch for runners that updates the Forerunner 405 and 405CX with a second-generation touch bezel that works better under sweaty conditions. It’s the top of the line runners watch from Garmin, at least in terms of ones with this stylish form factor, and is sold both with and without a heart rate monitor.
Garmin Approach G3
The Garmin Approach G3 is a smaller version of Garmin’s Approach G5. The G3 GPS for golf comes with over 15,000 courses preloaded for the US and North America, and that list continues to be updated. Like the G5, it allows you to measure individual shot distances and show the exact yardage to fairways, hazards and greens.
DeLorme World Basemap now available for download
DeLorme has made their worldwide topo basemap available for download, at a cost of one cent per 100 square kilometers (minimum purchase $10). I’m flying today, sitting in a cramped seat, so I’m just going to link to some additional images and paste in the news release for more info…
Satmap Active 10 TREK review
The Satmap Active 10 TREK has finally come to the US, four years after its introduction in the UK. And what a difference four years makes. We didn’t have touch screen Oregons then, and super-thin iPhones and GPS receivers with raster imagery were just starting to be seen. But in 2011, the Satmap is reminiscent of the tech of yore, feeling more like a clunky PDA than a cutting edge piece of gear.

Magellan eXplorist 310 announced

UPDATE: See my hands on Magellan eXplorist 310 review.
The Magellan eXplorist 310 has been announced ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show, bringing an entry-level model to the new eXplorist handheld GPS line. The 310 utilizes the same hardware as the eXplorist GC, which has a smaller, non-touch screen as opposed to the eXplorist 510, 610 and 710. As an aside, I’ll have a hands on review of the eXplorist 710 posted in the next few weeks.
SPOT Connect lets your smartphone call for help without cell signal
UPDATE: Read my hands on review of the SPOT Connect
I should have seen this one coming. The folks that brought you the SPOT Satellite Messenger and SPOT Communicator have announced the SPOT Connect – a satellite communicator that pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing you to send text messages, email or even post to Facebook and Twitter from the middle of nowhere. Pretty nice when you need to tell the spouse “twisted ankle, will be late” or summon search and rescue when you break your leg in the backcountry.
