Garmin Trailhead series–AT & PCT

Trailhead-AT-PCTGarmin has rolled out a new 24K topo map collection, the Trailhead Series, starting with two titles  — the Appalachian Trail (AT) and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). No word yet on the  Continental Divide Trail (CDT), which isn’t as well mapped, so its arrival may not be imminent.

The Garmin Forerunner 410 is a GPS sportswatch for runners that updates the Forerunner 405 and 405CX with a second-generation touch bezel that works better under sweaty conditions. It’s the top of the line runners watch from Garmin, at least in terms of ones with this stylish form factor, and is sold both with and without a heart rate monitor.

The G3 GPS for golf comes with over 15,000 courses preloaded for the US and North America, and that list continues to be updated. Like the G5, it allows you to measure individual shot distances and show the exact yardage to fairways, hazards and greens.

The Magellan eXplorist 310 has been announced ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show, bringing an entry-level model to the new eXplorist handheld GPS line. The 310 utilizes the same hardware as the eXplorist GC, which has a smaller, non-touch screen as opposed to the eXplorist 510, 610 and 710. As an aside, I’ll have a hands on review of the eXplorist 710 posted in the next few weeks.

SPOT Connect lets your smartphone call for help without cell signal

I should have seen this one coming. The folks that brought you the SPOT Satellite Messenger and SPOT Communicator have announced the SPOT Connect – a satellite communicator that pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth, allowing you to send text messages, email or even post to Facebook and Twitter from the middle of nowhere. Pretty nice when you need to tell the spouse “twisted ankle, will be late” or summon search and rescue when you break your leg in the backcountry.
